Blisters on Dial?

Has anyone seen this before? Looks like blisters or scales on a dial. Gives me the heebie jeebies to look at.

Early 90s sub. I'm seeing more and more of these from just browsing online. I personally would not like it if its a feature of the aging process. Looks more like damage to me.

I have a mid-90’s sub that has the same issue. I’d post with a picture except I’m not sure how to post a picture lol

Had to laugh at heebie jeebies
Never seen that issue before, I dont think its aging because I seen older models that dont have issues on the dial. email an AD with some pics maybe something they've seen in the past or send the pics to rolex though their social media page, see what they say

That's the elusive Gonorrhea dial Sub. Similar to the nipple dial, but more promiscuous, obviously. Very rare, and very contagious.

I didn't know Rolex has a "Rolex social media page? and see what they say?"

Do you have that info, since you brought it up?

I like the look. Probably adds 5k to the value. You could call it pre tropical or almost confetti or not yet spider. Like false wear on jeans. The ultra rich will pay extra to look like they have actually done something wearing the watch. I absolutely love the look of genuine tropical dial subs. Wish I was ultra rich so I could get one. I just have to get my Black bay out of the safe and do something wearing it for 40 years or so. LOL

The Tudor Subs from the 70's had these problems , the theory is the early batches of paint were the culprit. Referred to sometimes as dial rot they are popular amongst vintage tudor collectors and command a nice price.

Looks like the lacquer is separating from the paint on the dial.

Aah...good old dial damage being peddled as “patina”...

If the paint on your car started blistering like that, you’d be back to the dealer ASAP

. Starry sky. Galaxy. Nebula. Got to make it sound sexy to drive desirability. I heard a great one last week but can’t remember it.

Kidding aside. If I’d owned the piece I’d leave it and keep it. I’d avoid buying one with what effectively amounts to damage or degradation. If the paint or the lume starts flaking, it’s past being able to be called “desirable” to collectors, imo. It’s just sentimental at that point.

Well, the whole reason pretty tropical and spider dials sell for more is that most of the time the dial damage isn't pretty. You're not paying extra for the damage -- you're paying for the rare damage that actually turned out nice to look at.

If that look is uniform across the dial, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I'd view it as unique. If it wasn't, it would drive me nuts.

Any year ranges/serials that have a similar paint problem within the Rolex lineups?

It sure looks like water damage to me. I personally would not be buying a watch with that on the dial. The movement most likely won’t look much better.

There is a batch of polar explorers where the paint caused the dials to turn cream over time, but as far as i know no dial rotting. But im far from being an expert.
