Will Ceramic subs lose value?

I"m looking to buy a green face/bezel ceramic submariner. They can't be found for much below retail at the moment. Should I hold off for a few months and wait for the grey market price to go down? Or do you think the ceramic sub will hold its value?

Dont think that is ever going to happen. Sub-c green is limited production. You may find a pre-owned at lower price, but dont expect much of a discount. Rolex prices are going up and up, once or twice a year.

Rolexes hold value, there's no debate about that. The new ceramic Subs are just that "new". Therefore, there aren't a lot available on the secondary market. The pre-owned ones that are for sale are still the current model, therefore they only go for slightly below retail. In 10 years, there will be an abundance of secondhand ceramic Subs and their prices will normalize in a range based on their age and condition. The question is, do you want the ceramic Sub? Is it worth the wait for the discount or will you just want the new hotness then? Yes, if you hold out, the price will "come down".

Rolex don't make limited editions.

The prices of the new Subs are being inflated by the fact that they are new but already their prices are falling. When both the black and green Subs were issued last year they sold at premiums that disappeared within a few months. Today you should be able to buy a new piece at MRSP or even a slight discount and it's my guess that this discount will continue to widen as time passes.

Whatever the case, you should not pay a premium.

Boy, truer words were never spoken. I remember when the 'three' Musketeers of Milgauss came out. The GV Milgauss was going for thousands of dollars over MSRP. The 'new' Milgauss's are now being sold at discount !

No not if you buy right !

Currently most LN's are selling on forums preowned for more then I paid for mine new ! (has been two increases since my purchase I do believe)

Yes I know they are still having a peak and this will settle just like the GMTII-C's but even once they do settle and selling at 20-30% off retail by then with Rolex's increases it will more then likely be above what I paid.

But at the end of the day it's a watch not an investment but then I do like knowing it holds it's value, feels better :-)

I think if you expect a newer model to hold value-you are expecting too much. I think one shoyld expect it to be worth at least 35% less the minute you walk out the door if you paid retail. For new Sub LV--a bit different as the watch is still an allocation watch and not readily avaialable--AD's can't order them so it will do better. Allocation watches clearly hold value much better.....

Yes, but in two years if msrp is 15%higher, how much will you have saved after waiting two years.

Saw a NIB green ceramic sub at a non AD last weekend. Asking price was $8300 USD, that is above MSRP. I figure he is higher priced to "leave room" for negotiation.

the average is 3-4% per year, no more

Besides, look at the Yachtmaster I

Listprice is 8300 euro and you can still find them for a lousy 4300 euro ... somethimes it take much more time before seconhands prices follow the listprice

That's why I typically do pre-loved. Much like cars, I hate being the one paying for the initial depreciation hit.

Do not rush out to buy one. Take your time and pick it up when you see a good deal.

The new subC LV already costs more than when it was released last year. Roles are ensuring that you at least get your money back on these things after a couple of years.

Bought a Submariner Ceramic in black this week for $6200.00. I think I got an extremely good deal. Asking was $7350.

To be honest, one of my thoughts when i was buying this watch was that it was going to be a major change in Submariner history. Which i thought would make it hold its value. But once i bought it, none of that mattered. Just having my first rolex and the reason why i bought it meant sooo much more.

i love my sub c! its amazing. i love everything about it!

I got mine at a great deal for Canadian standards. And since it was the first year for this model it's just going to go up. I could probably sell mine for how much i paid for it right now if i wanted to. The key difference i would say is that the entry point for this model was what 7250 it's not like you have people who bought it for significantly less several years ago. It was one of the reasons i chose the sub over the GMT. GMT was selling for slightly less than the sub c but many people picked one up for much less several years ago.

My own opinion / $.02

Supply & demand, I think its fair to say, green is in much lower production & supply than the black ceramic, and if it that pattern holds it will help hold good value, plus this is the iconic sub.

Its hard for me to imagine it being 1/3 less value pre-owned anytime soon (1-3 year after release) then when looking beyond 3 years, the new list may be up 10-15% which may close the depreciation/used value gap.
but definely a good idea to shop around 10% off MSRP MAY BE ATTAINABLE depending on where one shops and how they approach it.
