Dropped watch

Hey everyone. I dropped my watch and cracked the Crystal! How serious and expensive is this fix going to be? I bought watch on secondary market. Should I bring it into a local AD?

I wrecked my Harley in 1985 and my YG Day Date hit the asphalt first. My point is, no matter how bad it is, it can always be worse.. Good luck!

Pull the crown out and stop the movement.

If it was me, I'd want it inspected closely to see if anything in the movement is now off. The shattered crystal/cyclops got hit pretty hard to do that much damage. I'd do a full service unfortunately.

The watch wasn’t running at the time luckily but I pulled out the crown to be safe. I do see some glass on the dial now

Definitely don’t let it run. Get it to an RSC.

Is there visible damage to bezel or case? Is it only visible damage to crystal?

If so, you may have dodged a bullet.

I only see damage to the Crystal. The bezel looks ok but do see some glass on the dial.

I spoke to the local rolex AD and they will send it for full service. Hopefully nothing more serious is found

Hopefully it’ll be a new crystal + a full service.

Since you bought second-hand, I would make sure your AD knows you want a full RSC service. That way you get a 2-yr. Warranty.

Make sure to pull the crown out to stop the movement, but in doing so it'll lose its waterproofness so ensure to keep it in a dry environment. Take it to your AD and send it to the RSC. Sorry that happened to you OP!

Great advice above about getting a 2 year warranty. Getting it serviced will also give you the peace of mind that your timepiece is authentic.

Good luck!

I did this several years ago. As others have said, stop the movement and take it in to have it serviced.

My crystal shattered much worse than yours. Had to have the hands and dial replaced. RSC provided pictures of the damage that had happened to the originals and there was no question that it needed to be done.

Skip the AD, take it in or send it in to RSC yourself!!
This way you'll have the communication routes open to you, and not through a third party (the AD).
Take pics too!!

I'm pretty sure he lost his " waterproofing " when the crystal busted.

Couldn’t bare to have it sitting in my house anymore. Was home with my 2 year old and 6 month old but that didn’t stop me from heading to the AD with them lol.

I will keep y’all posted and thanks for all the feedback

Stop the movement, bring it in for service and a new crystal.

What do you think the cost of a new dial would be? I do have insurance. I’m hoping it’s just the crystal and then a full service.

Thanks

I would skip the AD and send it directly to Rolex yourself. This way you can speak directly with the Rolex service team regarding needed repairs. If the watch gets scratched and the AD sent it, there is no way to know where it happened.

Having gone through the same thing with my GMT, I can tell you that stopping the movement and sending it in for service is all you can do- and don't beat yourself up about it. Accidents happen. A new crystal and full service (to make sure that no shards made it into the movement) was all it took.

I would think that the only way the dial would get scratched is if the hands swept up a shard and moved the shard across the dial before you stopped the movement, but that would have to be a pretty good-sized shard. Did you see any crystal shards on the dial before you dropped it at the AD?

As others have said, it should be sent to a service center. Due to the degree of damage to the crystal, I think the case should be opened and the jewels inspected as well as everything else to make sure everything is intact and working properly. They can also pressure test it to ensure water resistance. Good luck with everything and let us know how everything goes.

RSC will insist on a full service before agreeing to replace the crystal in any case.

Damn, sorry to see this OP.

Sounds like you’ve done everything you can do for now, on your end.
Hopefully (and most likely, based on pure speculation of looking at your photo) RSC should be able to get it repaired and back to you good as new.

Fingers crossed for you!

Perhaps $750- to $1000 for a service and crystal. Hopefully that’s all you need. It’ll be fine. It’s happened to many of us.

I know that feeling. I dropped my Datejust, and shattered the crystal. Your AD service center will repair it.

Do you have insurance? If you do, you may find that your watch insurance will cover it.
