A solid block of carbon fibre

AP does make some innovative watches.
This case is at the forefront of case technology.
Somehow, I don't think we can expect something like this from Rolex for at least 100 years.

lol. what a crock. i hope they arent trying to justify that price with the cost of carbon fibre because the stuff is not expensive. a bicycle frame made of the stuff--probably 3 times the amount of material used on this watch-- costs about 3-5 grand

You know, that case may represent the forefront of technology but it still looks like my kids finished it off. It looks really rough around the edges and the dial is so busy. Not for me

It will probably take Rolex 100 years to get it right

BTW this is the AP "Clown master"

Yikes 40K! I could buy a lot of stuff with 40K...

Very interesting case design though, looks like it survived a nuclear explosion.

I would have a very difficult spending $40000 on this watch (even if I had it to throw around).
Some of the screws on the bezel seem to be countersunk to far.
If they can't get these things right, what else is wrong? I know, Im anal.

I have to agree with Miner the bezel edges around the screws looks terrible. For 40k that better be one hell of a movement.

Ooohh No, Nothing to do with your bum Mate, for $40K they better get the case absolutely perfect IMO. Like I said I reckon my kids could do a better job.

No offense, but it looks like it came from one of those toy machines at the Wal-Mart doors. For 40,000, I'd like to see platinum, or the like. CF just has never felt good, either, IMO.

Something tells me that the hex head screws are just for looks. Unless they are attached from the back they can't be tightened as is. For 40K they need to do a better job than that.

Hey Lol-X - just from looking at this and hearing the alledged price . . . really makes me think this isn't Carbon Fibre but is instead we call Carbon Carbon, the same stuff we use as brake discs and pads on the GP bikes, F1 and Rallye cars. It's not made using a resin or epoxy of any kind (that I know of), it's made in a super high heat and high pressure kiln, with layer after layer of Carbon being added until it's thick enough. Then the material is machined just like 6061 alum, or any other fine piece of solid metal.

Here's some bad photos of the stuff I'm talking about. A part of a Carbon Carbon disc, and a side shot (which admittedly is pretty horrible). The whitish markings on the side are special heat sensitive paints that I use to track the temperature range the discs are getting to on certain tracks, when they change color I know the disc has exceeded that range. I like somewhere between 450-600 celsius (840-1100 F.), haha. I'll try to take some better photos next week in Estoril.

That looks like a raw carbon fiber and not the carbon fiber checkerboard dial we come to know carbon fiber.

Well, there ya go - one of the rocks in the wearer's head has migrated to his wrist. That's progress, isn't it?

I think you are right MotoLiam. The watch is called an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore "Team Alinghi" Limited edition : 1300pcs and is said to be 'forged carbon'
I do like the jet/rocket hands on the sub-dials, they look cool.

Forged carbon sounds like squished charcoal or vulcanized rubber.

Handled it in person, watch is awesome. And the price is not because of the material, it is because of the movement, name of the company and marketing......oh wait, is that AP or Rolex I am talking about.

And the guy that buys that watch doesn't care about the price or others thoughts. The two guys I know that have them are more independent thinkers than that.

Can I get a used set for my bike ( 916 SP Ducati, 851 Tricolour or 750 MV Agusta F1). Thank you.

I see a very familiar logo on that watch. Does anyone else see the resemblance?

EXACTLY what I was thinking!

This gets me thinking about trademarks and names and the like...

How is it that Rolex can have a watch named Explorer (since the 1950's) and Ford can swoop in and use the same name on a POS baby SUV?

Chevrolet had a POS tarted-up Cavalier named "Beretta" in the late 80's-early 90's era that caused Beretta (the fine Italian gunmaker) to file suit (and win) to cease and desist manufacture thereof.
