Mother of pearl is the shell part of the oyster. The thin layer of pearlized shell is used for watch faces. It's not necessary to use diamonds with a mother of pearl dial. But most watch designers consider the two materials to look good together.

Tyler, this is for you:

mother-of-pearl
Related: Minerals

(nāŽker) or nacre , the iridescent substance that forms the lining of the shells of some fresh-water and some salt-water mollusks. Like the pearl it is a secretion of the mantle, composed of alternate layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolin. Among the chief sources are the pearl oyster, found in warm and tropical seas, chiefly in Asia; freshwater pearl mussels, which live in many rivers of the United States, Europe, and Asia; and the abalone of California, Japan, and other Pacific regions.

So we are both right.

Here's a fine example of a Mother of Pearl (MOP) dial. I was looking for a good excuse to post it again.

If you know anyone called Lulu, you know Pearl. Lulu is old Arabic for Pearl.

It's a 79163 but I think you have to stipulate you want the mop dial and oyster bracelet. Yes it's a ladies TT DJ, in fact my wife's.

I don't have a current pricelist with me, but a TT DJ runs CDN$6,500. I also know that a MOP Rolex dial adds an extra $1,500 to the price. Not sure about the ice, but I'm sure it's an extra few thousand. In Canadian dollars, you're prolly looking at over $11,000.
