27 years old and it's still got it! Will the ceramics be as cool in 27 years?

Can't argue, a friend asked me which watch should be his next, he's been buying watches for years but has never bought a high end brand. He was looking a number of big brands, however I told him to get a no date sub. He's been very happy with the watch and has said he couldn't have bought a better watch for all occasions

I agree. As much as I love the explorers and gmts, and I know every man and his dog has a submariner, and the Sea Dweller and Deep Sea are bigger and better; I can't help think this is still the do it all-go to-ultimate one watch rolex....

The 1680 is the original Submariner Date.

Date? Why.
I personaly don't get the date version on a Submariner. It is useless as a Submariner. |

That you don't get it says more about you than us. With all due respect.
We like a date function so we can see the date at a glance, and we aren't diving 24/7. I can't count the times I had to sign papers and glanced at my Sub to confirm the date, Bloody brilliant function. And I for one prefer the cyclops look, it adds to the watch's appeal IMO. But that is why they produce two kinds of Subs: for those who "get" the date and those who don't |

If I were to play word association and someone said Rolex .... I'd be very likely to say Submariner

I really really like that picture. As timeless as the watch, hope you don't mind I saved it.
I gotta say though that I'm partial to this model, The 1680, wow...now this really makes me all warm inside. And yes with a date. I will own one soon. (photo courtesy of Jacek in the classifieds) |

Didn't buy my first Rolex until a few years ago when they had full metal links and good quality clasps and not these "tuna can" clasps, but I guess it's just a question of taste...
