another thing to consider is the absence of polished center links of the sub (= better for daily wear)

Can't go wrong with either. I usually just bring whichever I'm enjoying the most at the time.

Dilemma of dive watch vs GMT

Very complicated. Where what you like the most.

If you're not worried about running out of air just wear GMT

What do you mean spoil the gold? Gold is more impervious to saltwater than stainless steel.

Go out and get a Tudor Black Bay Pro? Problems solved: all-steel, 200m WR, 2nd timezone.

I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing the PM GMT around the pool and at the beach. So I'd take the Sub.

This one is both and is under the radar.

I'm PADI certified but with my family it's hard to dive by myself so I'd most likely only see myself in the pool and shallow beach water. In other words the 100m WR of GMT 2 is more than enough for what I need and the added functionality of dual time is very useful for the time difference of Hawaii with the mainland.

In other words, I can't think of one reason to wear a dive watch (300m) with me when I already have a GMT 2 when I'm vacationing. Well I guess the other reason would be that my dive watch is ceramic whereas my GMT is rose gold so less conspicuous to wear the dive watch.

I guess it's a rhetorical dilemma but I'm interested in what others have to say since many of you have a bigger collection than I do.
Lol it’s simply a vacation. Take any watch u please and just enjoy the time in Hawaii

Never can understand reason for these kind of questions or “what should I buy next?”

Side note:
I m going to the bathroom to take #2 in next 5 mins. Should I keep my sub on? Or switch to Panerai? Please tell me what to do.

100% this. My Suunto dive computer has undoubtedly saved me from the bends on more than one occasion, I would never dive without one.

If few venture outside the shallow end of a pool with their Subs, I'll bet even fewer 'time' anything with their Daytonas

I do a lot of diving and used to do it for a living. A backup timer is always useful though its not necessary for recreational diving. Im still old school enough to have a rough plan of tables when I'm diving just in case. My GMT has held up like a champ up to 40m.

Also, love my Garmin descent for the actual diving. highly recommended if you're into that sort of thing.

Just upgraded to the Garmin descent mkii. Its just as conservative as a Suunto. Great watch! Now if I can just get my wife to stop responding to texts underwater…

I agree with you on this point.
Unfortunately, however, gold is a less hard material than steel, so if you use your watch in water and hit it on a rock, gold is damaged more.

Haven’t dived for a few years now, but when I did I always wore my 5 digit Pepsi regularly down to about 120ft or so.

No problems at all. Still got the watch and it works great!

I own both. If one had to go, it would be the GMT. It is impossible for me to overstate just how useful I find the glidelock feature on the submariner. The easy link is nice on the gmt, but not as great. Frankly, Rolex making adjustable steel bracelets has ruined me for other brands. I have tried Grand Seiko's on at least half a dozen times and never buy one because of Rolex adjustability.

In short, I vote submariner.

I have a buddy that dives with his 1970’s GMT regularly without issue. I have a GMT 2 and a Submariner but ask the question: why would you want to? Wrist dive computers are much more safe and way less expensive. I gave up diving with my new 16613on my very first dive when a barracuda made a run for it.
But to each his/her own. When diving, I’m always hoping to find a Rolex.

In the pre-Ceramic days, you could pop a timing bezel onto your GMT and it would be effectively a Submariner.

Nothing wrong with taking the GMT, especially given you'll probably have something else for bottom time.

They are wonderful and friendly, especially considering how many tourists they must cater to.

Bring both. They shouldn't take too much space. Wear one, put the other in your carry on. Wear the PM outside the water, the Sub in the water.

If you are doing some light swimming in the ocean or pool, the GMT II should be more than fine and shouldn't get too dinged up.

If you are going scuba, go Sub. Right tool for the job.

Either way, you're covered.
