Sub vs GMT II

Hi everyone,

As some of you know, I have a booked trip to NY next November and will be pulling the trigger on both a Sub or a GMT II.

What are your thoughts?

I´d like to acquire a model that carries the Rolex heritage and would be always up to date and have that unique appeal of being recognized everywhere. Between, these two models, which one would fullfil those expectations?

Additionally, I would really appreciate to have an idea of the budget I will have to save for both watches.

Thank you

I like the Sub, between the two. But, pick the one you like!

You have to try both on and see which really calls out to you in terms of looks and comfort. You'll know once you have them side by side and can try them on one after the other.

As for prices in NYC, expect to pay US retail price, which I believe is $8550 for the Sub and $8450 for the GMTII. You'll also need to pay NY sales tax, which is an additional 8.875% on top of the sale price.

It's a little hard to tell from you post if you are considering both or only one of the two since you said you were "pulling the trigger on both, but then state Sub OR GMT. In any event both fill your needs. Both have been "up to date" for over 50 years and both are easily recognized. Having said that, more people are likely to assume the GMT is a Sub than vice versa, but both are easily identified as a Rolex. Both have rich histories.

Try them on. Assuming you don't have a specific attraction to the functions of either watch then get the one you like the looks of more. The most obvious difference is the PCL's on the bracelet of the GMT versus the brushed center links on the Sub.

They are both awesome. You can't go wrong.

For me, if it's only one it's the sub. But I dig them both big time.

Kamek,

Thank you. I have a long time to decide! Anyway, prices are a little bit off of what I expected...

As the prices are a little bit over of what I expected, might as well be thinking of getting a used one.

Any thoughts on used Rolex in NY?

Thanx

They are both great, and iconic. Get one and then save for the other

The batman GMT will be available, just another addition to drive you mad trying to choose.

Just try them ALL on.

This option is a little difficult to me, as it is very hard to send money from Brazil to US due to local laws.

However, it would be the best option....

I have a GMT 2 and chose it over a Sub. Can't go wrong with either, I love the extra hand.

GMT for me, as I see a lot less of them compared to subs. Disclosure....my first two watches were subs, but just bought a gmt and love the slightly different look.

I recently had this problem. I went GMT 2. I find it more relevant to my life because I keep constant contact with family abroad. I don't dive and nothing I do requires accurate to the second lapsed time reading. Both have heritage. Both recognizable as a Rolex, although the sub seems to have an edge in this category because more people know what a sub is as far are model names go, my coworker thought my gmt2 was a sub. So for me, relevance was the deciding factor.

I originally bought the gmt-c when it first came out because the sub-c wasn't out yet and was pretty content.. Well after the sub -c came out I couldn't gett it out of my head. Eventually I broke down & flipped the gmt-c in favor of the sub-c. Couldn't be happier and haven't regretted it once. You can't go wrong either way, but IMO the sub-c is the rolex to own. You have to ask yourself some questions
1. Which function are you going to use more / prefer
2. Polished center links or all brushed
3. The sub is slightly heavier and sits slightly higher on wrist
4. The glide lock clasp of the sub is superior to the gmt flip lock (not really a question)
5. Aesthetics ! Which one looks better to you
Good luck

As to which watch you should buy, I hate to say, but only you can decide that. There's all kinds of variables in play when purchasing your first high end timepiece and all the variables are yours to define. You've picked two iconic Rolex models, which are world renowned and both beautiful. What you have to decide is which one suits you best. No one can decide that for you but yourself. If you ask me, I'm a submariner guy. I have my personal reasons for liking the sub over the GMT that have nothing to do with why you may like one or the other. This is an intensely personal decision.

With regards to buying used...Used is the only way I'd buy. And there's no way I'd recommend going into NYC and buying a used Rolex, except through an AD, particularly if you're new to the world of Rolex. And if you decided to buy used in NYC from an AD, then you're going to pay top dollar. I'd take others advice and get yourself a budget together, then contact some trusted sellers on the forums here to make a safe, educated and fair purchase for whichever piece you decide to buy.

Good luck! Show us some pics when you get it.

I've owned both, amazing watches, if you can't get both I'd take the GMT.

I was contemplating the GMT II for the longest time but the polished centre links were rather off putting. My view was that those belonged to a dress rather than a sport watch. I wasn't too keen initially on a SubC due to its ubiquity, until I chanced upon the SubC No Date. That's a beauty in its simplicity and elegance, and I did not hesitate.

Good luck in your search but rest assured either choice is a good one. After all, it all boils down to personal preference.

Between the two, GMT, hands down.
I was deciding between Explorer II and GMT IIc and because of the polished links I chosen EXII.
But I am so in love with the bezel of the GMT that I want it badly!

Submariner is the last watch from Rolex collection I would buy.
