If you very fascinated it is best you try it one when the chance permits or similar AP. That is the best way to "understand" AP and most other watches we talk about here. These are not value proposition items (what you mentioned about 3 Djs vs one AP) these are emotional luxury objects with high level of craftsmanship and horological weight. If you are looking for value and comparing it against getting 3 DJs (lovely watch) or 100,00 Casios then the watch is probably not for you TBH.

Seen a 15400 blue asking $27k in the for sale section and a 15202 blue dial for $41k. I think the suggestion is saving on that spread.

In my opinion, apples and oranges. APs are just stunning watches and true works of art from a detail perspective. They are truly beautiful. When I want to wear something special, I reach for my AP. As a daily beater, the Rolex will be 10 times tougher and take a way better beating. I don’t think they’re in the same league, and certainly shouldn’t be considered for the same workload.

A 15400 blue is not near the same price as a 15202. As a 15400 blue owner, I wish it was, but a 202 is a solid 18-20k more than the 400.

Datejust was my pick. My wife has 2 DJ"S (1 women's TT, and a DJ36 men's SS) along with an inherited AP Women's TT Royal Oak. Even though the AP might have more prestige, she has never worn it. She prefers the women's DJ.

If you stumble on an AP from the 80's (does anyone really care)
but the Datejust... they do...

so I say the AP has a time line... the Rolex does not...

AP... living in the moment

Thanks for this-I think I understand what you are saying and my initial question was not really meant to relate to financial value-more to the overall value/meaning of a collection. To use your terms-the emotional value/attachment that we place on a watch. I have not handled an AP, and am genuinely interested in "how much better" it might feel, over an already damn fine datejust- and then how to incorporate that, or not, in a collection.

IMO, the Datejust is a much better looking watch. Same for the Nautilus. They were watches a few years ago I did not even notice or like. But the media bombardment and hype has made them somewhat an acquired taste for me. I will think very hard if one of them comes my way in the future. I loved the DJ from day one.

If it's a choice between the two as a one only, I would take the DJ. One thing I prefer is the 100M WR of the DJ over the AP which is only 50M which makes it a rain only watch. I would not submerge the AP. The AP is probably a bit more fragile than the DJ. The DJ is the better all around watch.

I like classically styled watches. It's why I have the Sub no date.
