(2) The holy trinity, a newcomer

So in a previous post one had to go.
Now of course there is an untaken spot :-)

I listed a few candidates.

A few rules.

1- had to be brands with a long history, so NO new and small independents as much as I like them
2- ofcourse high end finishing (no Rolex Omega, Cartier, Breitling, ...)
3- a lot of complications should be available (no Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Breitling, ...)
4- Should be widely available so brands that make at least a few 1000 watches per year (Thats why I excluded FP Journe)

It’s either Lange or Breguet. JLC would have been a contender 15 years ago but they lost their soul.

It should be JLC but it ain’t. Plus they lost their goddam minds with those recent price increases.

Lange for sure.

But…. ALS is a “new company” remember?. Only been around since the 1990s. It’s disqualified from this criteria according to the OP.

Of course if that argument is now inconvenient for you and you want to graft their “long history” to the current company, then ALS would be disqualified for using slave labor in forced camps.

No.. ALS will never be trinity, sadly. Great watches but a dark past…. Or not enough past… either way, their past disqualifies them.

Plus they have no real icons in their line up.

JLC is much more deserving.

TBH I just forgot Lange but wanted to include it
On the other hand ... As you said the company lacks history

JLC has the potential but imo their finishing is far from good enough. They are nice but owning some ... you really can't compare them to haute horlogerie when it comes to finishing

Lange 1, Datograph and Zeitwerk ranges.

Lumens, Pour Le Merite pieces and Handwerkskunst pieces as additions to a range.

Nice watches. Not icons.

ALS just lacks gravitas in my opinion; more of a connoisseur
brand.

Frankly, Rolex is a better candidate. Icons, prestige, history galore… finishing not quite on the same level. But finishing is like the frosting. Keep it. I want to taste the cake.

I agree. Of course the Lange 1 and Dato are icons. AP has, what, the RO in all of its 1000 varieties. It could also be Breguet, but to me the Tradition line is the only truly remarkable thing they’ve done in the past 20 years or so.

Agree here. Their finishing is just all over the map which is the consequence of offering sub USD 10k watches. This devalues the entire brand and they still failed to garner mass appeal so a lose-lose in my book.

ALS no contest. Its got a long history and far greater technical achievements than anything else in the past few decades.

It seems like the terms you’ve set forth only allow for the selection of breguet.

Company lacks history? Blancpain is not the same Blancpain that was created 300 years ago. It was revived by Jean Claude Biver after he bought the rights to the name a couple of decades ago. So why is Blancpain in there?

Parmigiani? It's 25 years old.

I have no idea where your criteria for "old" comes from.

ALS ALL THE WAY.

+ 1 to both of these posts

ALS loses out due to their break in history… damn war and split of Germany getting in the way haha

I vote ALS.

ALS. If their history or lack of disqualify, Breguet for sure. I wish they weren't a part of Swatch group though.

There is no Holy Trinity circa 2024... unless it is Rolex, Omega, and Cartier as those are the three best revenue brands and proven with hard data.

For The Really Old People
If you're a longstanding TRF member who is really, reeeeeally old (over 70) and using long-outdated data with the 1960s Holy Trinity marketing campaign....

1. Rolex
2. Omega
3. Cartier

All three have very deep horology history as well.

Among those, Breguet is the very easy choice.

And I would put Breguet over ALS, the latter only existing since 1990 (well, relaunched, the brand not existing between 1948 and 1990). Plus, while ALS has impressive technical features and finishing, for me, it's too clinical. For me, Breguet also brings style, passion and history to the impressive technical elements and finishing.
