All NFL Players Are Getting RFID Chips This Season

It's a brave new world, but not too far from what NASCAR has been doing for a couple of seasons.
In terms of size, speed, and strength, NFL football players have always been superhuman. This season, they’re all about to become cyborgs, too.

Last year, the NFL tested out Zebra Technologies MotionWorks RFID system in 18 stadiums to track vector data: A player’s speed, distance, and direction traveled during each game in real-time. This season, that wireless tracking technology will be embedded in every NFL player’s shoulder pads, and viewers at home can see all that data come to life in the redesigned NFL 2015 app for Xbox One and Windows 10.

I'd like to see an accelerometer to measure the G force on impact - the Hit-O-Meter.

Why not put it directly in their helmet and track G's and look for concussion correlation?

I guess that can't happen because, just like black boxes in cars, the data would be used later when the doesn't-know-the-risks player sues in retirement.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Hit-O-Meter, but the helmet data would be outside the purview of the entertainment industry.

I thought it might be to alert team officials when they get arrested and tossed into lockup. I'm still a little mad about Aldon Smith screwing up his career again.

Ha ha hah a ha ha. So much talent these days wasted due to sense of "entitlement."

He needed a full time mentor - the way the Cowboys worked with Dez Bryant. Dez is bucking that now, but it kept him out of trouble long enough to mature and develop coping skills that don't require high risk behaviors.

I think after 5 arrests his career is done.

This chip data could be kind of interesting to track on a sport like soccer. American Football, which I love, has so much down time! Tracking distance traveled in each game in soccer would be so cool.

Kind of cool technology. It'll be interesting to see what the NFL comes up with in 5 or 10 years from now. They are definately leaders in marketing and making their game more interesting to watch as compared to other sports.

Trackers will be located in all major prisons.
