Tech expert advice needed.
Dear fellow TRF members,
I recently purchased a vintage sub with a cal. 3035 that hasn't been serviced in a long while (possibly since '91). I brought it to RSC NY to get an estimate and they quoted me 550 for movement service and 150 for a new crown and crown tube as they mentioned that there was some damage there (with no specific detail). I plan on getting it serviced in a few months once i get some extra cash, but am wondering if in the meantime I should refrain from setting the date (either via position 2 or a position 3, 24hr hands wind). The watch runs ok--maybe about 1-2 minutes slow per month. But my concern is that the potential lack of lubricant may mean that a 24 hr hand wind would do some damage...? Advice from tech savvy folks is especially appreciated here. Thanks all!

If you need a crown and case tube,Do Not Get Your Sub Wet! As far as setting the date, that should not be a problem, especially if the watch is only losing 2 to 3 secs a day.

I couldn't agree more with snowrocks - avoid water like the plague! As far as setting, winding and making adjustments etc...feel free. You won't be able to do any harm between now and when you take her in for a service.

Crown tubes are normally changed at routine service times, and sometimes crowns too.You should not have any problem turning hands 24 hours etc.And would expect your watch will still have a high water resist factor if the crown still screws down OK.The cal 3035 was introduced around 1977 produced till around 1987/8 then it was changed to the current Cal 3135 1988.

After about 5 years the lubricants are ether gone or not working as intended. The watch gears in your watch are now pretty much metal on metal. Would you do that to your cars gearbox? Let it wind down till you have the money to service it. Also as stated above avoid water like the plague!

If a car sat in the garage for a few years without being driven, would you change the oil before you would take it on a long drive for the first time?

Not only the oil, but the tranny fluid, radiator fluid, and add a fuel additive or pump the fuel out of the tank... New battery most likely as well.
