Patek 5270g.
Hi Guys. long time no see.
What do you guys think about the 5270g? Would you trade a 5170g for this piece? Obviously I would have to trade it in and put more money. |

I love the 5270 - it's a patek perpetual chrono, a grail for many! I wouldn't get it just yet though, Basel's only a month away. If you're spending that kind of money I'd want to know what patek have coming up.

Yes. Sell it! 5270g is a technical master piece. The dial is a chameleon!

It caught me off guard, so as always I seek the RF advice. It's not final or anything, I just want to know what you guys think about this. There is no denying that the 5270 has more things going for it but at double the silver. |

You already know my answer Logan, however, I must repeat that I'm leaning towards the trade myself. The 5170 is very nice and I know you wanted one for a long time but a Grandes Complications remains a masterpiece of horology. I'd still consider some other references but if I was in your shoes I'd definitely consider it.

For the original 5270G, DEFINITELY! For the one with the funky tachymeter absolutely not.

Speaking for myself I just don't like it as much as the original one. That tachymeter looks like something they wanted to put on it a bit too much and it seems like they preferred to make something that wasn't aesthetically that nice just for the sake of adding something...
I don't hate it but I'd much prefer the cleaner version of the first 5270.

hmmm never seen that one before, but my gut reaction is not good.
back to the other thing, the perpetual calendar is wonderful if that is what you want, as Carl said, there may be some other references to consider? imho, the 5170 competes with no one, it is a perfect piece, i wouldn't change a hair. mind you i get put off setting my GMT hand:) i will enjoy living vicariously on this one

Had the same dilemma. Decided to keep the 5170 and add a thin perpetual instead for about the same money

Tough call. The clean chrono & Breguet numerals are so nice on the 5170.
If it were to be one or the other I would have to go 5270. Good luck. |

That's an idea I didn't think of, what perpetual calendar did you choose instead?

Yes I would do it in a heartbeat. The 5170G is beautiful but the 5270G is on another level

I don't like the new dial. The tachymeter is a bit tacky!

It's a no brainer if it's a series 1 5270 you have in mind. I really don't like the latest versions, and I love blue as Myopic mentions.
5070 for a 5270 would be a more difficult call I think……. I have had a slightly bizarre couple of days considering matters not so far removed from this debate. Watch this space for more details…….. |

Is the AD giving you any discounts? I was offered a 1st series double sealed with no name on paper for 140k (grey) just a couple of months ago, gives you a figure to aim at.....
As for choosing between 5170 and 5270, I would go for 5270, better looking than 5204 too (I don't mind the upside down moon phase so much but the luminous markers just don't look right). |

This is a very tough choice indeed - I love my 5170 (J) and I think both the J and G are real beauties.
The 5270 is however in a different league altogether (only the series 1 dial) - it may not be as versatile as the 5170 and is obviously a lot more expensive but it is a trade that you should seriously consider. If you can negotiate a deal whereby you do not end up losing anything on the 5170 and you can get the 5270 for a price close to what secondary re-sellers are listing them for (see astorlive on ebay as an example) then I would say go for it. Best of luck and keep us posted! |

I wouldn't do it because I love the 5170.
