I'm not opposed to other brands. I have Rolex and Omega watches. Ironically, it's some of the cheaper brands I'd be more willing to pursue (Breitling, Nomos, Tudor, Tag, Sinn, Damasko, and many of the microbrands out there, etc.).
But if I am spending Rolex money, then I'm getting a Rolex, period. The brands in the same tier or maybe slightly higher are just not appealing to me. I hate to pick on JLC, but there is no way I am spending $11,000 on a Reverso Tribute. Zenith and IWC are other examples, and Cartier, too (although I do like the Tank). We have to go much higher upmarket before other brands appeal to me. Specifically, the holy trinity. So, if we're talking Patek, AP, and VC, then definitely, I'd love some of those in my collection. |

This, plus manufacturing and materials quality, performance reliability.

Good question OP. Many reasons, several already mentioned.
I too have owned a variety of other brands, from Lange to Moser to AP, PP. But what I think is unique is the collecting aspect of Rolex. Serif vs. Non, Zenith or 4130, engine turned or fluted, not to mention spider dials, “tritinova” dials, the list goes on. Hell there’s an entire site dedicated solely to 1675’s. I spent hours before I bought mine just looking at dials and inserts (went with the MK1, long “E” PanAm insert btw!). I know this doesn’t apply to current models but still, not sure you can do that with many other brands. Tons of history + tons of information (thanks TRF) = interesting. Just my $.02. Rolex & Cartier were my dad favorites in his collection for years. A Patek was his “moment”.
But key reasons for my collection: Rolex for design variety, reliability and timeless design. Cartier for elegant & timeless French design related to jewelry icons. Patek for refinement and being the top. i

I’ve gone vintage and no more than one watch per brand, but Rolex was only one of many really great watches from the 40s-60s. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Like most people, I started with Rolex and have now ventured off into higher end brands and also lower end brands. I think in a few years, I’ll add a few more Rolex’s to my collection.
But as of now, it’s just not worth the hassle. There are some brands, such as AP, where I think it’s actually worth the chase. But for mass produced watches like Rolex, I’d rather not play the game, especially with middle-men AD’s. So my focus is solely on AP, but also easily accessible brands like Grand Seiko, Cartier, Casio, Tudor etc |

It's the only brand that sings to me. It started when I was about 5 yrs of age. I loved the crown on my Dad's TT Datejust. It was so unique to me. I asked my Dad for one, not knowing anything about it. He chuckled and bought me a Timex. I bought my first at age 16. I bought a brand new 1680 sub for a hair over 1K with taxes included. My love for them grew and when I began to make money, I began my journey of collecting. I enjoy looking at other brands but not to own. It brings such pleasure wearing my watches. Love Rolex.
