The 50 Biggest Summer Blockbusters...

Ahhhhh...summertime, that magical time of year that every school kid and Hollywood studio executive looks forward to.

What constituted a blockbuster, was supposedly JAWS, was the first movie that Hollywood went ALL IN, to advertise AND open in most markets at the same time.

Meaning they had to make a ton of copies of the film to distribute to everyone for opening day. Where previously they had just opened in major markets and let the buzz trickle down. And slowly let the films circulate from the major markets to the small markets.

It is said that a movie costs x number of dollars to shoot, and x time 2 or 3 to advertise and to supply prints of the film to the theaters.

The blockbuster was that gamble. Big budgets and big distribution.
