Peculiar start to my Rolex journey

My first post and my first Rolex - and my surprising second.

After spending a little over 6 months on the waiting list for a Polar, I pulled the trigger for a black 226570 on 10/10 with Hodinkee having a good enough sale to make the cost almost identical to list (after factoring in a bunch of rebates and cash back I was able to stack). I also had it shipped to Florida to save on taxes, as my girlfriend would be there shortly to visit her family and easily bring it back with her.

Well, only two days after it was delivered, before I was even able to see it in person...

I got the call. My AD had a Polar for me. Naturally I said yes. So now I have both. From 0 to 2 in less than 48 hours. That's my entry to Rolex.

The question is, which one should I consider to be my "first" Rolex? The first one I bought, or the first one I actually owned.

Initially I was thinking I would try to trade the black one for something else, but I kinda love it. It was a preowned watch, but it's absolutely pristine. No flaws that I can spot. So, for now, I'll keep them both.

Cheers to all, and for anyone who thinks it will never happen, you absolutely can get the call, with no previous relationship, in a reasonable amount of time. 6 months for a Polar isn't too bad in my opinion.

Loving my Rolex(s) and what a cool way to start this all off. Hopefully these are the first of many.

Congrats, that's awesome. Hopefully, you wanted both. They are a great pair with the differing dials. Best of luck on the rest of your Rolex journey!

Congrats, if you let one go. I'd let the one go that you bought pre-owned. First purchase from AD is special. That is the reason I'll never let my black GMT go. Too bad that was my only purchase from AD lol everything has been through grey market.

I have seen many posts similar to yours. It kind of seems like that’s how it works out when things are going well for you.

I love that you have both versions.

The polar was my Rolex gateway piece. Congrats!

Edit: the box you got from the gray dealer seems off by the “ROLEX” font. The ROLEX font on the Polar box is far more bold.

I haven’t acquired a piece in over a year so not sure if the boxes have changed

I didn't start out wanting both, but now that I have the black, I'm enamored with it more than I expected. Unlike most Rolex models, the different dial colors make for really different watches.

For now, I'm definitely hanging on to both of them.

I bought it from HODINKEE, so I would be shocked if anything were amiss. I trust them to do things correctly. Thanks for pointing it out though.

Keep the AD one. That’s yours from the start and it is nice to be the one and only owner of a watch.

I don't know really. I love the pop of the white dial, but I'm also really used to white, as my daily for the past few months has been an SBGA211.

It's kinda nice to enjoy the black as a contrast.

Congrats and welcome to the rabbit hole!

White dial Explorer II is a beautiful piece. As you get more in Rolex, you’ll notice that a lot of the sports dials are in black. Given the polar is also from an AD, I’d say it doesn’t hurt to hold onto the black dial Explorer II for a bit, but I’m guessing you’ll eventually trade/sell it as you start looking at other Rolex pieces. (Sub, GMT, Explorer, Air King - all in black dial). Also there just aren’t that many white dial offered sports Rolexes.

Also goes to show folks are getting the call! For other people, unless you’re waiting for a Daytona or Pepsi, at this time it’s good to wait it out for the AD.

Very cool - however, I’d be inclined to trade the black for a Submariner for a bit more variety :)

That's an option I'd consider. I also long for the one Rolex I wanted but didn't get when it was available - Z blue Milgauss. Might have to trade it for that one eventually. We shall see.

Congratulations x 2. That is a good problem to have. Enjoy them both and eventually sell the black dial and get a different model for variety.

Cool story! Glad you got the call… and if you can afford it, keep both! You can always trade the one you bought second hand for another Rolex down the road if you want to…

Congratulations. I started with the Polar and decided to give the Black Dial a chance and glad I did. Both work well but the Black Dial is kind of my go to. Both work well in a collection.
