Hey guys! I planned on purchasing both of those real soon and I was curious how exactly do you tell if they are fakes? I know the weight of a Rolex feels heavy for a watch and something about the Magnifying Glass. Anyone have any tips to spotting a fake Oyster Perpetual?

Welcome to TRF..

We are a discussion forum for authentic Rolex watches, not fakes..

Learn what the real one looks and feels like, and you will likely never be fooled...

There are plenty of other Forums dedicated to replicas if you are interested.............

The surefire way to know if it isn't a fake is to buy from an AD (authorised dealer). If you're looking to buy from the grey market, do your research beforehand, and buy the seller, not the watch

When I got my Submariner, I though just the opposite. "Boy is this thing light"

Well, no high beat mechanical watch ticks once per second. Modern Rolex movements beat 28800 times per hour, which works out at 8 times per second, which gives the impression of a sweep. Unfortunately, that's no guarantee of a genuine Rolex - if you do your digging on replicas, you'll see that they are upping the ante on their deception. On another note, the only movement with a perfect sweep hand motion is the Seiko spring drive range.

My best advice is to actually hold one in your hand, play with it, examine it under a loupe. Once again, best place to do it is an AD

Well, then it's good to get an education... The OP is a tough one to detect as it isn't studied as much as others..

Today, fakes use a high beat movement, just like Rolex... this myth is a carryover from when fakes used quartz movements in Rolex market cases... You cannot tell by watching the hands any more..

The magnifier on Rolex is usually badly done and the date will not "fill the cyclops" like it does on a Rolex.... frequently a tell.

Rolex also uses solid gold, so there will not be any plating, and the font on the dial is crisp with no fuzzy stenciled edges..

Still, the best way is to look at the movement as nobody makes a fake Rolex movement......... but you have to know what the real thing looks like first.....

it's by knowing the real ones intimately that you can spot the false.

I've only seen a few counterfeit Rolex watches and in every case, they were shabby and I would hope that anybody could tell the real from the fake.

I guess, however, that if you've never seen or handled the real thing, then even shabby workmanship might not be the dead giveaway.

I think the best way to get a surefire Rolex is to buy one from an AD.

When you've owned the real thing and you've studied up on the subject on boards like this and have taken the time to visit ADs to try on some other models, then you might consider the used and the gray markets.

Your first Rolex is a very special thing and knowing that your specimen is both bona fide and virgin is a good way to start.

That is what Rolex wants one to believe; some of us know better.

slightly off topic, but I've noticed that with some of the fake daytonas in Shanghai that the subdial represents the date rather than a chronograph function - must have got the shipments of fake movements all mixed up...

There seems to have been a lot of this sort of talk on the forums recently.
