We always leave $1.00 outside overnight for each member of the household and then on New Years day I bring them in and put them away never to be spent.
Supposedly it assures that you'll always have enough money to get through the next year.
My bride says that she heard one about not doing housework on New Year's day.

I use sage incense all over the house on 31st Dec to rid it of whatever shouldn’t be here and start the year as clean as possible.
