In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Uttered this one a lot to new guys on the job...

There's a time for talking and a time for action. If you can't tell the difference or act when you need to then you're a liability.

From the news these days it looks like there needs to be more talking from the thin blue line and less action.

The "If you can't tell the difference" part is what gets most into trouble these days... I've seen many err on both sides of this...

People believe what success is told to them by other people and by that, they walk that thin line because they seek recognition by their peers. Success is judged by a mans own terms. While I, like others seek recognition from peers as we all do, i put into disregard what people say to think. You could say i have burned my bridges but for every bridge burned means that there is no going back and no bad things to follow you, only what is ahead.

They say to stop and smell the roses, but why not take a rose and plant it in your garden for later. Nurture and care for something that is difficult to grow and it will reward you or teach you a lesson.

With our best intentions, even the things we work so hard for don't go sometimes.

People these days, young people place so much of their attention, as you say, walking a fine line between what they are told is a success and a failure. If you're going to walk on the edge, do it by living in the fast lane and not holding back.

“If Wolverines have a strategy, it is go hard and go high and go steep and never back down, not even from a mountain and least of all a grizzly. Climb everything, trees, cliffs, avalanche chutes, summits. Eat everybody. Alive or dead. It’s still warm heart or frozen bones…I have learned a little more about courage and a little more about what wild means by being on the wolverine’s trail.”

That's how i go.

Well seriously and unfortunately it is a job of real time serious split second decisions that are often Monday morning quarterbacked for months. As they should be. I and all the people I used to work for were all about accountability. Let's be patient and see what happens. A tragedy all around for sure.

The last thing the community wants is for officers to disengage from pro active patrolling. I mean getting out of your car to investigate something or talk to someone. More and more it is becoming hunker down and ride out the 911 calls. Nothing self initiated. Less liablity. This is the lesson that all hard working community policing officers are learning from the tragic events. Stay in your car. Don't get out unless you are called or it is on fire.

Only the community suffers when this happens.

The most important story we will ever write in life is our own. Not in ink, but by the actions we take.

This quote is from Albert Camus.

George Carlin would have never said such a thing.
