Glad to see it.

Is this what would be considered “normal” over say a 50 year period?

It's California....nothing is normal.

Although with the reservoirs nearly empty they were able to a do a more comprehensive search for Atlantis. Dammit, they were this close.

I guess one major problem is not enough capture of the rain and snow pack, although our ocean is nice and full.

Water is a complicated issue here. Agriculture uses about 85% or the water, homes about 5-7% and industry the rest. Right down the center of the state is a massive agricultural area and there has always been bickering over who gets what.

The movie Chinatown was about the basic theft of inland valley water (Owens Valley) to feed the newly subdivided San Fernando Valley for housing developers.

Thanks for this detail

So basically there are parts of California that aren’t “naturally” food growing areas without a lot of manmade intervention.

I guess the same can be said for many areas on earth.

I grew up on the Canadian Prairies and that’s what I would call “normal” agricultural areas where you grew grain crops without much or any irrigation. Much like what is grown in the Midwest US. That’s my sort of normal.

Here, California is a type of “breadbasket” of the world but the crops mostly need irrigation. Massive fields of strawberries, almonds, grapes (wine), avocados, etc etc….www.Californiagrown.org

So it’s a whole different animal, AND also requires a lot of labor, which brings with it the added immigrant/worker debates because it’s very labor intensive. Almost everything is hand picked.

Driving along the roads you see thousand upon thousands of acres, that are irrigated, AND covered with plastic to shield from the sun, with removable/portable shade cloth and plastic.

Got it.

I grew up and still live in Waterloo County Ontario … Mennonite country.

Some of the very best agricultural land in North America . The sold is a rich black cotton soil, perfect for cropping and many dairy farms.

Not large enterprise farming, still home to the family farms of yesteryear

It's all above my pay grade.

What soil can grow what. In Hawaii the soil is very red-ish and it's perfect for specific crops as well.

Driving in the Central Valley of California, a black dirt prairies boy like me, would never think that the soil here is any good for much. Shows you how much I know.

It is interesting that the people that immigrated to North America from wherever was always searching for the same climate/soil that they knew from the old country, so they could perpetuate their experience and expertise here in their new lands. And grow the same crops.

I think that the majority of farming in California is corporate and massive. Also private equity is a major player too. Even the big name wine producers are no longer family owned but instead huge corporations bought them up.
