That from the time of their introductions in 1959 and 1962, up until the early 70's, the 5512 & 5513 respectivley, were offered as an option with the EXP dial.

Also when the GMTs were first introduced, the cyclops was an option until the early 60's.

Just some info for those interested.

I read somewhere that the 5512 was the first model in the sub line to have the crown guards and Mercedes hand.

Crown guards yes. Mercedes hands no. That would be either the 6536, 6200 or the 6538A in the mid 1950's. It's hard to say which model had them first because they were all offered at the same time.

The so-called "Explorer dialed" Sub is considered one of the rarest of all Rolexes, and obviously commands a stunning price. I saw one on ebay that was verified authentic by James Dowling (as in he had actually held that exact watch) and teh STARTING bid was $45k.

Ouch.

Apparently, the Exp dial option was only offered in England, and to make matters worse it was only offered as an ordered option so very few were ever made.

From the pics I've seen of them I think it's beautiful.

Are you referring to the early or later models being offered in England? Or both? Just curoius.
