Thank you for posting this information on this watch. Now to educate myself. Any other model idea's for 1980? I wouldn't mind knowing if anything special came out that year. |

I was browsing this thread and noticed the OQ has a rapid date change.
I just acquired a 17013 and the date change is not rapid, instead it takes around 2 hours, from 11ish to 1 ish. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this indicative of the watch needing servicing/containing a franken-movement? Thanks |

My previous Oysterquartz, a ref. 19018 Day-Date, had a problem pretty much exactly like this. At around 00:00, the date window would actually get blanked out completely, and the day indicator would get stuck between two days. And then gradually, completing sometime around 02:00 to 03:00, the date would re-appear, and the day would be the full correct day. It took a trip to the RSC to get it sorted. Although amusingly (though I wasn't amused at the time !), it actually came back with that problem fixed, but with a whole new one courtesy of Rolex. It now changed sharply at midnight with the date advancing correctly, but jumped two days at a time. So (for example) it would go from Monday 1st to Wednesday 2nd to Friday 3rd, and so on. Quite how the RSC missed that who knows, but anyway, back to the RSC it went, and then it came back properly fixed. |

This is really interesting. I've heard this from one of my Oysterquartz friends. I will let him know to check this thread out! Thanks!

Could be in need of a service, but if it is keeping good time (around two seconds a month) I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for sharing this info GB. That YG with the pyramid bezel and bracelet is bananas. Gotta get one.

How much does a standard DJ typically go for on the Oysterquartz. I know there are a ton of variables but just a general non specific range is all I am asking.

Just joined the OQ family; got a great deal on a '99 serial 17000 with original boxes, papers and tag. Thinking of taking it to an RSC to refinish the case/bracelet.

I love the 1530. I have a white dialed OQ now, but that's just temporary, 1530 is the dream.

Here's something you don't see in a movie everyday: Rolex 17000 in the trailer for the new movie "The Big Short" about the subprime mortgage crisis!

Awesome. I just saw the movie last week. Tons of great wrist shots. I LOVE that bracelet on the OQ and 1530.

Wrist shot with my 1530
Not an OysterQuartz but the integral oyster case/bracelet design was the prerequisite to the 17000 OQ. Only 500 to 1,500 ref. 1530's were ever made and it was the first all steel Rolex oyster with solid centre links and a sapphire crystal. Very rare and unique given that it houses the calibre 1570 automatic movement (the only all steel oyster with an auto in an integrated design) which Rolex replaced in 1977 after just three years with the analog-quartz 5035 which ran until 2001.

I see a lot of Oysterquartz's on here (and forgive me if I missed a post on this one) but what about the original Rolex 5100?
The bracelet on this one is a thing of beauty!

I really like the look of these watches with a black dial. Something about them brings out the sharp lines of the case.

Can you still find a blue replacement dial for one of these watches today? I had previously owned the SS with a blue dial. Bought it in the mid 70's (I think) while on a layover at the Capt Cook hotel in Anchorage, AK. Would like to duplicate it again if possible.

Yes you can. Sometimes they pop up on eBay or the various watch forums. I had a new blue dial installed in place of my champagne original when it was in for its first factory service about 7 years ago. (see page 2)
