First Rolex Purchase - DJ36 - Question re: Dials

Hi all,

I'm currently waitlisted for a silver DJ36 (fluted/jubilee) at an AD in Toronto and am having second thoughts about the dial color. Specifically, I'm wondering if I should go with blue instead. For those who've had either or both, a few questions:

1. Is blue easier to dress down? I.e., if I were to be wearing casual outfits more often, would the blue be 'sportier'? I'm otherwise sold on the fluted/jubliee setup for comfort/aesthethics reasons but recognize that going with the oyster bracelet would make it more casual.

2. Is blue more legible - especially outdoors?

3. Does a darker dial like blue tend to look better on small-ish wrists?

For me, darker dials are more legible. I would also always take a blue dialed watch over a silver dialed. Fluted & jubilee is ///the/// classic DJ36 look. Again, for me, I wouldn't choose a DJ36 without this combo.

Either would look great. The silver is classic, and will never go out of style. The blue is very sharp. Yes, a darker dial will “wear a bit smaller”, but in a 36 mm size, it’s not really an issue. You can wear either with anything. Pick the color you like best, and forget about everything else.

Blue is so nice but do you wear a lot of clothing that is blue? If not why not go with a more neutral color such as silver or white.

I think a silver or white dial would be more versatile and it would match with everything. Plus, most rolex models have a black dial, so it might be nice to have a light dial as a contrast in case you buy some other models in the future that would be black.

I prefer the blue. My wife prefers silver.

I think the blue is more legible but the silver takes on interesting color hues in low light. Can’t go wrong either way IMO

I don’t wear dress shirts much at all, so for me I’ve found it to be very versatile.

I have the blue dial on a DJ41. Everything mentioned above is true. Silver is more classic. However, I would say the blue is easier to dress down.

I own the 36/silver/fluted/jubilee. I love it. There's something about the monochromatic look in the 36mm size that I really enjoy. It really pops and I routinely get compliments on it.

One man's opinion but in the 36 I prefer the silver to any of the other dial colors. The monochromatic look kind of strikes me as a poor man's YG DD 36 with champagne dial - and I absolutely mean that as a compliment.

If I were buying a DJ 41, I would feel oppositely. To me the larger size is an inherently "sportier" watch than the 36 and thus I would be more inclined to go for one of the colored dials - probably choosing the blue.

To close I will say that I have not found my silver 36 to be too "dressy" at all, and I am a very casual dresser. I'd have no concerns about wearing it anywhere from the beach to the office. However again, opinions may vary. For reference my wrist is between 7-7.25 inches.

Edited to add one last thing: the blue is absolutely going to be a more legible watch than the silver is so if that is one of your primary considerations, give it the weight it deserves. Personally I find the legibility of the silver to be perfectly fine outdoors but with my aging eyes it can suffer indoors when in dimmer lighting.

Still internally torn on this (as the silver is stunning) but, after a few days of considering, I told my AD I would change my order to a blue DJ36 jubilee/fluted. Legibility was a primary consideration. Thanks again for all the help on this. Now just a matter of waiting for an allocation.

Congrats on getting what you love. I love the silver dial and for me I rotate my wrist back and forth for legibility.

Congrats on making a decision. I’ve seen the blue in person, and it’s stunning. I have the Wimbledon TT, and the mint green. Any DJ is beautiful. Enjoy.
