Improved Availability?? - AD vs Grey Advice - OP

Hello All -

This is a bit of a stream of thoughts. Not sure if I should go grey for what I want or "wait" with an AD.

Been wearing Rolex for 25+ years. Remember the "old days". The recent games/dance over the past few years can be frustrating for those of us that have been at this for awhile.

Anyway.......I have a small history with my local AD and asked to be placed on the list for an OP41 Blue. After a few months I got the call (Nov 2023). YES!!!!!

But........I had just received notice from work that my position had been eliminated. After a little bit of thought, I made the difficult decision to pass. I did not feel that it was good karma considering my situation. Did not want to memorize that moment. I was honest with the AD while letting them know that all of my purchases are for me and I am not interested in flipping.

So here we are..........A few more months have passed. The work situation resolved itself for the better. Today, I reached out to the AD. Thanked them for understanding the past situation and asked to be placed back on the list.

They were polite and my rep let me know that they would do what they could, but explained that this is not a common piece.

---------

I am a little unsure of what to do. Do I go grey? Continue with AD? There are a few pieces that I want to add over the next few years.

Not sure what my path should be from here. Grey price seem to have dropped quite a bit (for most Rolex) from the peak.

Thanks for letting me vent and get my ideas out. Always interested in the thoughts of the community.

This is the regular dark blue one? I find that watch very plain and boring looking, so if he says it's not a common piece then let him keep it. Look for something else and more fun.

Thanks so much for your opinion. This is exactly what I was seeking.

Grey prices on the OP41's are obnoxious. They think because it retails for "only" $6400 they can jack it way the f up. Prices are north of $8500 which is damn near 50%. I do think if you can get it for retail its a great value albeit "boring" as someone said.

I’m not sure why your SA would say the regular blue OP was not a common piece. Sounds to me like you are being stonewalled. Perhaps payback time. Go grey for this one. The blue is nice, but get the silver!

I think you should wait it out a bit, say 6 months or so. If you get tired of waiting you’ll be able to pick one up from a trusted seller here.

What’s the difference in price these days?

Retail is $6,400. $7000 out the door with tax. There is one that just sold on here and initial listing was for $8000. Some of the grey dealers, David SW, Luxury Watch (UK).......Asking $9400.

Good value at list price. Maybe even $8000 for the convenience of Now. But $9000+ is just way too much.

I’d wait it out at those prices.

If you want one now, you need to buy one used from a used watch dealer or individual.

I'd be inclined to hang on and also watch the pre owned market price in it case it drops to a more acceptable level. We all draw the line in a different place. For some it's MSRP. You will know what feels comfortable for you.

Continue with the AD, if they were able to allocate a watch for you before, then just wait as it can happen again.

This is the way. Going to take time and wait.

I would stay withe AD if you’re able to personally visit the shop every few weeks and support friendly conversation showing your honest desire for that watch.
Telling them you hope to have a stack of in them in the future not so much. And for them it might be a rare watch to arrive. Every AD is different. I’ve been to two AD’a that haven’t seen the reference I recently purchased at a different AD in over a year. A 41blue dj, no bueno at our local AD, that’s a ten a day request.

Wait it out for sure especially for the OP 41. As someone said 7000 out the door is good value. Unfortunatley grey dealers are taking advantage of the fact that this is one of the cheaper pieces and really jacking prices up. $8500-9k is obnoxious.
