Rolex Sub 1680 - Advice - V2
This is inline with the previous thread on the 1680. I could not attach more pics on that post...
Please let me know your thoughts on this piece. Detailed pics are here case back, movement, date function, etc. Refernce Number is 5,632,465... if magnified caseback says 69 as per the seller. Thanks |

from the pictures ( that are not the very best ) I can only say :
1) the dial is a mk3 ( last variant for white 1680 ) .. perfectly consistent to the case number ; 2) the insert belongs to the last series with fat numbers ( aka "mk3" ) : perfect for the watch ; 3) the case is in good conditions .. maybe polished a couple of times. 4) the case in a 5.6 mill. range has been certainly produced in 1978. |

I think it looks respectable and would be a great daily wearer
It can definitely take a polish Hands not matching isn't a deal breaker as long as they're original to the watch Sent from my GT-I9100

Not liking this statement:
Refernce Number is 5,632,465... if magnified caseback says 69 as per the seller. This would be impossible. Rolex stopped marking case backs with dates in mid 70's. a 69 case back would have come from a red sub |

pdoukas, I wouldnt trust the seller on that statement as the egraving was so small and I did not bother checking it. I am not sure its a date... Looks like a circa 78 from Ref Number and Dial...
Guys, thank you for your feedback and I look forward for more. Btw its price is around $6,800 for now should be able to lower it by 800. I heard white 1680 are in the $5000 range but if this a solid piece, I might go ahead with it! Thanks again! |

has the seller erased the "engraving " ( that is in fact made by a punch ) of the back production time ??
I will check in my records if the back belongs to a red 1680 or not , as there are many variants of punches in 1680 ........................... |

Marcello if you see in one of the pics i posted there is an engraving which was too small. I don't think the seller altered anything and bought it as is. Not sure of he even knew about the back production time if I didn't tell him to open the case...

Even at $6k is too high for a white sub in this condition. You can find better specimens for less if you look. I was able to get this all original 1680 from 76 with original bracelet and just serviced for $4k.

Hi Wahasa,
As said in previous thread, watch is in nice condition, but price is ridiculously high unless it is a full set (B&P), which does not seem to be. One of the pics shows it next to another Submariner (a Matt dial 5513 by the looks). You have a price for that watch? It might be a more interesting affair than the 1680, and some of us would steer our preferences towards the 5513. I am aware that you are based in the UAE. As a regular visitor, prices are far from competitive in that part of the world IMHO. You would be much better off sourcing from the US or potentially Asia. |

The 5513 is already mine :) I am already expecting a fat font insert and a super dome crystal in the next couple of days! Will definitely post some good quality pics soon!
I am going to pass as per your advice! Thanks peeps Wael |

the back of the watch is consistent to the case number ; here for comparison the back of a 1680 with case number in the 5.8 mill. range ....
you can well see that the particular shape and positions of the letters " S.A." are exactly the same , as well fonts/mutual spacing of the numbers in "1680" : ( the engravigs of some services made by a Rolex national branch have been hidden for privacy purposes ) |

Thanks Marcello, this 1680 seems to have no alteration as in in original... The only problem is its price as per everybody's input. Thank you for taking the time Marcello and everybody else...

One simple thing but important to me ......
I've never forayed into 1680's but am a Sub-nutter overall and matching hands and dial plots is a high priority when I buy a watch.
Just too damn hard trying to find matching hands after you've bought a watch. OK if you can physically view the hand set before you buy but if you're relying on pics, what looks like a great match for your dial often disappoints when they arrive. And the search starts all over again |

Paul .. I always resort to my local shops... Tritium is tricky I found a 5513 with matching hands and then part of the minute hand crumbled...
This time I was flexible... As long as they don't crumble I am ok if the are close... That being said for 1680 what is a no brainer for me is the silver open 6s and 9s... |

overpaid..., yes I did...
John, it sounds like you are smart shopper, I paid more than 6k for a fully Rolex reconditioned white Sub, new dial/hands/plastic/crown/silver date wheel, new 93150 bracelet, etc... Although, I do really like the new Rolex parts on a vintage watch. Your watch looks really good, similar to mine...
