True statement.

Sometimes life requires you to be in a place that exposes you to criminals, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

That was hard to watch. I love living in California, but laws are too lax.

Interestingly Toyota did start making the catalytic converters LESS easy to steal. Apparently the Toyota Prius was an easy target.

Over 25,000 catalytic converters are stolen from various autos across the US every year.

https://catconverterprotection.com/u...ft-statistics/

As the story goes, Willie Sutton was asked why did he rob banks? And the answer was, because that's where the money is.

People will always steal, so I guess we need to make it harder to achieve. There are also a lot of white collar criminals as well.

As for the watch theft, it happens all over the world, and it's highly organized, so there is a market for it somewhere. They aren't going to pawn shops. We need to dry up the market.

As for our watch hobby, realistically we're walking around with thousands of dollars hanging off our arms. Sad but true, but we are targets.

I mean, would we walk around with thousands of dollars in cash strapped to our wrist and not expect some "attention"???

Easily typed on the internet, but not usually a reality. Nobody is Chuck Norris, not even Chuck Norris.

Sociopaths don’t think like rational people. If you have what they want there is going to be an assault. A guy I worked with was beaten to death with a ball bat on the south side of Chicago for his sneakers. He stlll had his wallet, his cash, and his watch when the cops got there. The only thing taken was his sneakers.

You missed the point. Don’t worry about it. Sorry to read about your friend. Apparently, he wasn’t a threat.

I concur. Weather, food, vehicle culture, outdoor activities... but the penal/justice system is wildly skewed.

Do you feel comfortable wearing your Rolex in public given what happened to this poor man?

Wear mine all the time. Totally safe in Singapore and parts of the Middle East. Even parts of Florida are very safe.

Watch: What is "watch"?

LA is slowly turning into a dystopian hell... foreclosures everywhere in the city of Beverly Hills... heavy drug-use and gang activity in North Hollywood... I'd be afraid to wear a flashy 6 digit Rolex these days... thankfully I'm a 4 and 5 digit guy - "understated" is my thing :)

Still, very sad that watch crime has proliferated to the extent it has.

Good point. To have situation awareness one will need to be in a state of heightened vigilance. It is feasible to be in that state for a limited amount of time, it is not possible to stay that way all the time. What these cities have created is an environment where threats of violence are everywhere and all the time. No rational person can maintain sustained situation awareness without eventually succumbing to the side-effect of prolonged stress.

I concur. Just one additional thought: the "state of heightened vigilance" in itself is one of a stress factor, or even we can call it as stress in itself. It follows that even if you take precautions against an unforeseen attack, you cannot prevent them if you live in a place where a criminals smell "easy money" in the air.

In such cases, you are not a victim, but prey. What you see is a simple thing: This situations will raise, and it gets worse the less they have to fear a punishment. If there is no real consequence in the punishments, then they will be less and less merciful, because it is much easier and less risky to beat someone to death than to try to steal their values with a little violence.

There have to be severe consequences for antisocial, violent behaviour.
Potential miscreants must fear the consequences of their actions.
