Calipers

Hi all!

I am in the market for a set of calipers. After doing some research, it seems Mitutoyo and Starrett are highly rated. Does anyone have experience with either of these brands or others? Please do share your thoughts!

From experience, if it's for measuring watches (case, lug width, length, etc) as a hobby, just get the $8 plastic kind that will measure at a glance, and forever, to within .25 of a mm. The battery-powered digital type will die after a couple of years.

I use st/st Mitutoyo calipers at work. They are ok to 0.01mm.

For checking watches etc. plastic calipers at 0.1mm are good enough and won’t scratch.

Quick pix.

I have replacement batteries Adam.

The plastic calipers are $8.00, free freight and come with a spare battery.

I thought that would appeal to you Scots?

That seems strange Adam mine have been on the original batteries since I bought them.

I have a few pairs of calipers with the old engraved scales but find them hard to read at my age.

The dial scales look ok.

Starrett is the Cadillac of machinist tools, made in the USA since the 1800's.

Mitutoyo is the Japanese version, founded in the early 1900's.

You can't go wrong with either brand.

I have the same exact one as in the pic. I keep an extra battery in a compartment in the plastic case.

Used about 5+ years with no problems. (Now watch, it'll probably die tomorrow.)
