Sense of Community

This has been a wildly hard year for me. I work in elder law and we lost about 50 long term clients to COVID. Plus some long running personal problems. Because of all of that I am taking a leap of faith and moving from the East Coast to the LA. No job in mind but not to clear my head and re-center. Was really overloaded with stress right before the move. I went to see my Patek AD before I moved. We just talked all sorts of watches stuff for an hour. Nothing about actually buying or planning to buy. I was amazed how much better I felt after just that hour. That sense of community and pure enjoyment of the hobby is what I love about the watch obsession. Anyone else notice the therapeutic properties of being a watch person?

that's awesome and i totally understand. what i find cool is that you were able to do it at the ad. couldn't really say if that's the norm or not since i hardly frequent them, but it's cool nonetheless

I too work in elder law and see compassion fatigue all the time. Yes. A nice watch, cleanly pressed shirt, and a fancy dinner with my spouse can do wonders.

Glad to hear this. Really what it is all about. Props to your AD, most simply don't even bother to engage you in a discussion these days. SAs really only seem to be focused on sales & commission (which I have nothing against) but it is refreshing when you have a nice, pleasant watch conversation with fellow enthusiasts who ALSO happen to sell the product. If more ADs followed what you experienced, you would think it would only help their business.
Again, glad to hear about your experience and the level of service your AD gave.

Thanks all. My salesperson has been at this store for twenty years. He’s a bit of an institution and he is amazing. He really is a watch person and I started buying Patek because I trust him and he brought me into the brand. I buy brands he carries because I trust him.

It’ll also be nice to be in LA. Where I lived before I was 2.5 hours from the closest watch store. Now I’ll actually be able to go to watch meetups.

Well said Alexander, the watch community (even online) is special.

I hope the move to LA will be therapeutic for you.

So sad to hear about the 50 lost to Covid.
Glad you're feeling better after your conversation. Best wishes in your new chapter in LA.

Yes I agree. There is a sense of community here that brings a sometimes much needed break from the real world.

Good luck! Enjoy LA
