Funny.

Where I’m from you’d never come across that. Many wealthy people drive simple reliable hybrids. In fact, you’d be considered smart money.

Were I to have one, I would not refer to the action of controlling it as "driving".

Why? it is a nice car.

In the same way others don’t understand why some one will buy a PM Rolex I don’t understand why some get hook with cars. Different addictions I guess.

I drive one. I love it. Always runs, very well designed car to do one thing-operate frugally.
I call it the toaster, and while I take care of it, I never worry about a door ding or scrape.

I agree with that Don. I would go so far to say, at 51, I am a much worse driver than I was at 25! I do not like driving on I-5 in Seattle, When I drove a suburban, I felt safer, and probably drove less cautiously. Now I am always worried I will get smushed by a Logging Truck in their blind spot!

Perhaps the OP should have added a disclaimer; ‘Taxis, Ubereats, Lyfts, are not part of the perceived shame correlation’.

Many people beyond the above drive hybrids.

Agreed, I've noticed this among other things in some instances with regards to frugality / fiscal responsibility. Different strokes for different folks at the end of the day.

Would you say the same about the Porsche Taycan or BMW i8 Coupe or the Audi e-tron or the Jag I-Pace?

How long do the Priuses last? I owned two Honda for ten years and 200,000 miles each.
How is the “acceleration?” Existent?

I don't understand the scenario in which someone drives a Prius and is ashamed to admit it. Are Prius sedans being forced on people against their will?

It can't be economic necessity. A new Prius will run at least 25 grand. There are other new cars priced around 15 grand, not to mention all the used cars out there.

I admire frugal drivers. For most of my life, I bought cars for cash, then drove the wheels off them.

Not a prius but I command an Acura RLX sport hybrid. Getting a little long in the tooth but 377 horsepower and 341 torque with 3 electric motors propelling off the line is good for me. Plus nobody buys them so it is a rare bird if you're into that type of thing.

Last fillup was 29 mpg average in mixed driving. Not all hybrids are prius type slow and boring (sorry prius owners but true). See Acura NSX and above listed "exotic" hybrids.

Yes 2008 Prius here boring true but apart from tyres and the odd service it gets me and if required 4 others from A to B in comfort. As for being slow, in the UK its fast enough to get you a ban.
If I want exciting driving I take one of my old Porsches out, if more excitement is required I take one of my 5 motorbikes.

In my younger years I have pissed more money up the wall on cars than I care to think about.
