The Specialness Spiral.....
I thought this was interesting and in a wine thread recently we saw it and I wonder if there are people buying watches that fall into this as well.
Essentially the "special occasion" that never happens..... https://getpocket.com/explore/item/p...ay-explain-how

Cannot relate to this at all.
Similarly, the concept of delayed gratification.

I could see this with clothes, as mentioned in the article.
But my watches? Nah. I wear 'em like I stole 'em.

EXACTLY! I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be in a position to own the watches that I do and I intend to enjoy the hell out of every single one of them.
I also believe that if you’re not wearing a watch you should move it along to someone who will. Lots of folks out who would cherish it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm generally not a victim of this phenomenon. I make a point of immediately using whatever luxury item I've purchased right away. Once I remove the stickers and wave it around, it will see its intended use.
One exception which is ironically part of the article. I got a Montblanc Beatles notebook with a pen. I use the pen all the time, but can't bring myself to use the notebook when there is perfectly good crappy paper and drug store notebooks I could use. When I have something nice that is consumable with a long shelf life, I have a harder time using it. Not going to happen with a watch which doesn't change with use other than some dings here and there. But once I use the first page of the notebook, it's forever ruined! |

I too am guilty of saving imaginary wine for imaginary occasions.

But what we do see here is "the dress watch" specialness. The saving the "special" watch for special occasions, formal events, kind of thing. I see it less today than a few years ago on threads here and TZ.
It's in the "can I wear this with shorts". "I'm semi-retired so I never wear my dress watches anymore". Obviously sports watches are tougher than dress watches to some extent but is our dress watch really too fragile that on Sunday and we're hanging around the house watching fooball, that a dress watch is too special to wear.
