DJ 36mm on Leather Strap + Buckle Question

Hey,

What do you guys think about putting a modern 36mm DJ's on a leather strap? Also, I've heard issues about the straps getting damaged because of the sharp lugs?

One more thing, do you guys know about ordering Rolex buckles through an AD to use with a leather strap? Has anyone here done it?

A few things to consider:

Current DJ case has grooves between lugs, which may show. It’ll work, this will just be visual.

A custom strap will allow for use of your clasp. That’s probably most economical way to do it.

Rolex hasn’t made a steel watch on leather in decades (many decades) so getting a genuine Rolex pin buckle from Rolex will likely be impossible.

Vintage would be a good bet, with authenticity being the primary concern.

If your watch is TT, I suppose you could always pay a few grand to try and get the gold clasp from the last leather DD36. Unlike the similarly configured DJ and Daytonas, this isn’t a full buckle, just deployant clasp.

This is an Everose ref 116135 with a black concentric arabic dial and roulette datewheel. These are funny enough some of the rarest references out there but I really like them! Also available 116139 whitegold and 116138 yellowgold.

If you get a normal strap it will for sure gets destroyed because of the very sharp inner lugs (I have experienced it). I have recently bought a curved strap from Delugs and it avoids the edge of the strap to touch the sharp inner lugs!
I use a Rolex 16mm steel buckle.

If budget and ability to use a non-custom strap are considerations, I'd recommend the DD 11813x clasp. Less gold (so cheaper) and a "standard" deployant style, vs. the DJ's full buckle/custom strap version.

Is that a vintage buckle? Or were you able to source a new one?

Looks beautiful! Might I ask how you got the buckle? If it’s sourced new from an AD, how much did you pay?

Thanks! I am very happy with my curved Delugs strap. I know Molequin makes curved straps as well and they look very good too!
I have tried my Daytona with smarty endlinks and oysterflex but I don't like the look with the endlinks to be honest.
If you can get it from AD I think it's around 50EUR but it might not be possible now or depending on country as well I guess. Be careful if you don't buy from AD because there are a lot of fake Rolex pin buckles.

Wonder if it's worth attempting to source such a buckle as a "just in case" for anyone who may possibly some day want their watch on a strap. Is it just a matter of you/dealer knowing a model that actually came with a buckle like that and requesting a replacement?

What do you guys think about a dark brown suede strap with a blue dial DJ with fluted bezel? Would they clash? I often wear dark brown suede shoes, thus trying to match with the strap. Otherwise, perhaps a black alligator strap for more formal wear.

Had my '77 DJ blue dial on a tan leather for about 2 years. Really liked it, different look.

I have tried a brown suede from glc straps (very nice quality and price) on my Daytona and it looks good! Not sure Brown on blue though. I think a blue suede or a blue alligator would be perfect!!

Love these. I wish Rolex would re-introduce a Day Date or Datejust on leather, but doubtful as the move is towards sports watches and rubber.

No one who can help me with my question above? ;) I thought that end links would perhaps keep the straps from getting destroyed (and getting rid of the gap that might appear). :)

Does the springbar pass through the ending too, or us it "wedged" into place by the strap?

The endlinks on the gold Datejust are hold in place by the flutted bezel (need to remove the bezel to remove them) and has springbar holes like regular ss pieces (not sure if a metal bracelet would align with the holes, though). On the third party ss endlinks they are held in place by the springbars / band and they pass through the ending as well

FWIW, the last time that a steel Oyster was offered on leather (at least that I can verify) there were no end links, and just a gap, assuming this listing is to be believed:
