The "Real" length of a Rolex's life
How long does a model actually exist in terms of Rolex maintaining a supply of replacement parts? My GMT II is a 1985 model, how much longer will parts be made?

My understanding is that Rolex will service a watch up to 30 years after it is discontinued. I may be wrong, however...so correct me as needed.....

Yes, I bought the watch in 85 and have been wearing it ever since. I have it routinely serviced at RUSA. It never misses a beat. I guess I have always thought about Rolex as a lifetime watch, I guess it really is not.

Got my wife a late 60's OP and it was serviced to its original condition. I also bught a modern oyster bracelet for it and it fits perfectly.

The word is Rolex maintaines parts for 30 years after the reference is discontinued. I think that really depends on the reference. As a 1985 GMT yours is a 16750?
If so you're fine yet. Rolex is still servicing the 3xxx movements. |

Welcome to TRF Vic Mike is correct no need to worry about service parts for watches like the 16750 for a very very long time.

It might be different in other parts of the world, but the Toronto RSC says they have access to every component of this vintage early 1950's Rolex belonging to my S.O., and can overhaul it. It's over 50 years old now:

I live out in the Shenandoah Valley. One of the other reasons I was asking this is that I was thinking about getting a Rolex for my son. I was undecided as to whether to give him my 85 GMT or buy him a new Submariner. I think now I will just buy him a new one and save this old Rolex for my grandson. What do you guys think?
