This months GQ (Stephen Colbert on cover) had an interesting six page or so article on "How to buy a Watch"

Gives you advice on what to look for in watches (IE: movements, complications, quartz, mechanical etc...) How to buy a watch - From an AD w/ all the papers. Basically all the good stuff on this forum.

There was just one quote I wanted to share with you guys...

Look for the two big brands "Theres a pyramid with around FIFTY top brands, but at the very apex there are only TWO: Patek Phillipe and Rolex." Stick with them for quality and appreciative value.

Big difference in price between the 2 top brands.

Curious, what brands were in the Pyramid right underneath Rolex? What was at the very bottom?

They didn't have a list, they just said the pyramid of about 50. But here are the brands that they did mention in the article...

Hmmm - For me Hermes = scarves, Louis Vuitton= luggage & purses, Chanel =dresses & perfume, Montblanc = pens. They don't really belong. JMO. Larry

I would agree with the Rolex and Patek suggestion.

I can't think of other brand watches that hold or increase in value other than those two. Can you?

Rolex has been smart by continually raising prices on the new watches to hold or increase the value of the old ones.
Can this scheme keep working with prices escalating at such a great rate?

Patek seems to limit production. They have a unique niche with a great reputation. Their pricing is rather high for a watch that everyone knows. Since pricing is so high the watches lose alittle value at first and stabilize after a while since they sort of use the same scheme Rolex uses.

No other watch brand that I can think of can compare to these two.

In my opinion Rolex is more durable than Patek Philippe! So it should reign as the king of watches.

Oh! and the reason why Patek's slogan is "You never own a Patek Philippe, you just take care of it for the next generation" is that it takes 50 years to pay it off!

Swiss army is in there too. But for a price point it is an okay watch.

I think Omega should be in the top. For the quality and price point, I think Omega is probablty the best value out there.

Although I do not own one currently, I will one day.

Brands with serial production, the only other I can think of is Panerai.

Of course if you get to the "independent" makers there are definitely others that hold their value and some that increase.

- Like I said, these were tips on how to buy a watch, Basically it was saying to look for these two names and you can not go wrong.

The list was not complete, it was not even a list really - just over the article it showed pictures of watches, gave the price, and where to wear the watch

Didn't need the article for me to be proud of owning a Rolex. Just knowing the history of Rolex and quality, reliability and ruggedness does it for me.
