Was there no estimate agreed to? If something gets changed without prior approval somebody is either ignorant or seriously screwed up.

God forbid anyone want to keep an old watch fresh and usable. Damn things weren't built to sit in a safe.

Nick, what was the condition of the watch before the owner sent it in? What would you have done with it?

I think it's a bit shortsighted of RSC to just change all those parts without thought to how it might affect the watch's value - surely they must be aware of how much it's worth unaltered?

Maybe some people do not care about the value of the watch or historical value, they have been wearing the watch and just want it updatednad running well again so it can get back on their wrist so they can use.

This is not one-off case. In addition to 'standard service' 5513's are regularly returned with new gloss dial - an added bonus.

..a raped one

Am I missing something here

Photo of an original and unaltered 1971. DRSD sent to AS for regular service
after it was returned with new bracelet, new bezel, new bezel insert, new hands, new crown. Ruined for ever, devalued beyond estimate.

Man. I'd be crying too!

That's why I GAVE Rolex a list of things NOT to changed, and got them to agree on them before I let them touch it.

That aside, they did a fantastic job on mine, just what I wanted. Then again, it was very sweet before the service.

I think one like that would be closer to US$30,000+.

I think that's too low. Maybe with a white dial, but still too low, unless you are quoting "wholesale" prices. White 1665's are fetching US$8,000+.

Why? Quite simply my friend, Rolex doesn't care about a watch's originality only its functionality! Their views are that a fully serviced Rolex should function and look like it did when new, even if that means "raping" them, and replacing original part like dials and hands with new ones.

It's a sad fact, I agree.

BTW, that looks like a nice Mk.II DRSD in your picture.

Very true. Too bad Rolex does things this way instead of preserving their own heritage.

You had the right idea by getting them to agree not to kill it's value up front.
