simple question- how comfortable are the ammo straps?
Am intrigued by the concept of ammo pouch leather....(history, smell) being used as watch strap...
in reality, how comfortable are they as compared to the usual run of the mill leather straps for Panerai watches? thanks for feedback! |

Very comfortable. Like a nice pair of worn shoes.

For me, EVERY strap depends on if you have a perfect fit. You need the proper hole placement. It is leather and it wraps. Too tight and it sucks. Too loose and it sucks. Just right......mmmmmmmmmmmm.

My answer: Not very comfortable. Ammo straps are very thick and not very pliable. They look great and if you wore them continuously for years they would probably mellow, but I'm not a big fan. I prefer softer more comfortable leathers.

I have 2 Kaktus/fransson Ammos that are thin supple and wearable unlike any other ammo I've seen. It was love at first wear....I wouldn't buy any other ammo

In my limited experience, vintage leather straps are harder than modern. But that's not necessarily bad. They don't cling as much when you're sweaty. They of course have a worn, dry, cracked quality to them, whether you like that is personal.
While I found them comfortable, what I didn't love was the quality and perceived strength of old, dry cracked leather vs. modern leather. I just felt like I was wearing a strap that came pre-worn out. :) Not really true, but I felt that a good modern leather would strike me as higher quality, with better fit and finish, which I do realize goes against the whole idea of vintage leather. So what I did was have Greg Stevens make me a vintage ammo LOOKING strap, but from premium English bridle leather, and one from waterproof Horween leather. I love both, they look like a vintage ammo but IMO are stronger and better quality. Again, I realize this is kind of cheating. :) Don't care. :) What I did and do, is periodically, vigorously rub Kiwi brown polish into them. Over time they both developed a gorgeous, rich patina. And the Kiwi also preserves them nicely, while adding a little water resistance too. These are 150/90 btw. My wrist is close to 8". |

Love them! Gotta find the money size for you though. It will take some trial & error, no doubt.

Not as pliable initially as most modern 4mm+ straps that most "reputable" strap makers create. However the look is awesome and apparently they last forever and age gracefully. I'd advice purchasing one. BJ strap makes a great one at a good price point

you have to mold it to your wrist. the amazing thing is that it feels great in hot weather as well as cold. even with sweat. i dont feel the same way with oem straps. |
