Submariner deal or not?

I became interested in Rolex's about a year ago when a friend of my fathers gave me a vintage Explorer purchased new by my father. Ever since then, I have been interested in the history, models, etc.

What I really want is a Submariner or a Sea Dweller. I ran across someone on Ebay selling one for 299 (at that time). The add has since been pulled for a policy issue with Ebay. Anyway, the seller said to contact him for a "buy it now" price--guess that's what got him booted. Anyway, saw pic's. Supposedly it's a double red Sea Dweller (early 70's), comes with all associated paperwork, boxes, etc. Says he bought it new, but doesnt wear it anymore. "Sounds" and "appears" to be real. Says he will refund within 14 days. Asking for $1000. I know that Sea Dwellers are going for 3K and up on Ebay, and I would assume he would know that also.
Any thoughts??

Sure, here's a thought.... IT'S FAKE!

A double-red SeaDweller should be going for upwards of US$8,000 to as much as $15,000 or so. The reason this guy got booted from fleabay is that someone likely ratted out such a low price for a Rolex. Buy the seller, not the product he's shilling.

Let me get this right: This guy is offering you a watch currently valued at approximately $25,000 for $1,000, his auction was pulled from ebay, he's offering you this watch off-ebay where ZERO buyers protection is available, says that it "sounds" and "appears" real...

and you're wondering if there's anything wrong with this scenario?

Every single red flag possible is present, and you're considering going through with this? Really?

Everyone entitled to a fantasy comming true....

Just woke up. No seriously, as far as me considering going through with this, I dont think so. People will and have said I am crazy, but downright drooling goofy stupid, no. (I've grown up since then.)

The only way I would even think about considering this is if I was in the area of this watch and I was allowed to take to an authorized Rolex dealer/shop and get it in writing etc that it is the real deal.

Maybe I'll email him to see if he would send it to me so I could take it to my dealer. Think he will...

I don't think he will send it, but I like the way you are thinking!! If I had him on the hook, I'd pull it a few times to screw with him.

Can I interest you in purchasing some vintage emails I have?
These are from the Nigerian renaissance period.
I would be happy to forward them to you and you can have them verifed by simply following the directions contained within the emails.
No?
Hmmmmmmm, ok, how about genuine Rolex "Ciengauss" from the special clear case back millenium edition line sold in some of the finest markets outside of the USA. The "Ciengauss" is like a "Milgauss" but cheaper, only 10% the cost.
No?
Damn sonny, you are one tough sell.
How about a genuine "Sudsmariner" that has the Budweiser logo in red above the "Bar Dweller" on the face?

You forgot about the Colamariner. Seriuously Ghost, step away from this deal, unless you can mess with him a little bit like Daren said.

Yea I'm probably not the most reliable source you will find, but I'd say that you should shy away from that one. It's got major fake written all over it.

I've been an Ebay buyer and seller for years and when the deal is too good to be true there's only one reaso... IT IS TGTBT!
If you think someone is doing you a favour by selling you a watch at 1/10th or less the value they are not... pure scam my friend!

When seeking such vintage sort after watches I can assure you Fleabay is not the place to look.

I think you should buy it because my boss always tells me that you always learn from making big mistakes, so just think how much you could learn.

I've made enough "big" mistakes and this will not be one of them. To answer one of he posts, no this is not a joke. I saw the listing and inquired about it. Do I think it's fake? No, I think it's a real Submariner that he grew in his back yard under the money tree next to the yellow brick road!

And yes, right now I am playing with this "person." He assures me that it will be fully insured by Ebay no less, and requests that I send him all my info as well as a Western Union in the amount that "we" agreed upon. I told him, sure I'll give you all my info and I might even pay something, but I want the watch first. No response as of yet.

You are right, this guy is probably ROTF thinking he's got a sucker willing to a drop a good bit of change for a fake Rolex. Here are some things to consider:

What am I out? Nothing.
Does he have my money? No.
Am I having a good time screwing with him? Let me think about it..Yea.
Do I think he will send me the watch to have it checked out? No.
Will I send it back if he does send it to me and it's a fake? No but I might send him a quarter.
Will I pass off my "fake" Rolex as real? No but I would take it with me to FLA the next time I go cave diving and drop it off in a cave (assuming the thing is actually watertight), and wait for the stories to develop.
If he does send it and it turns out to be real will I pay him? Yea. The agreed upon price.

Yup. It's been a while since I was diving and I'm suffering from withdrawl. It makes me a little light headed. I need to get in the water so the pressure can put everything back into proper prespective. Doctor told me the best therapy until I get some pressure on my head is to screw with people on the computer.

Actually, I'm really boooored at work right now....

Psh. 900 bucks you got ripped off. I just bought a one-off Sub with skeletal dial and clear caseback plus plastic hands and a high quality rubber strap too. The best part, it's water resistant to 1,000 mm and it comes with a 1 hour warrenty! All for only $25,000. Man I can't wait for this thing to get here.
