I received my EII 42mm Black dial free as my 25 year anniversary gift at the company I work for (Schlumberger) I had several years of looking through the catalog and all the choices of watches or grandfather clocks, off the top of my head I could have chosen, Sub, Sub date, Milgause white dial, about 10 different color combinations of the classic datejust such as TT or stainless, also had 5 Breitlings, a 1/2 dozen Omega's and some low end stuff like Rado or Raymon Weil .

In the end I chose the EII, because I knew I was keeping this watch for LIFE, I earned this gift, it has my case back engraving on it, and I chose the watch I thought would fit my life the best. (Hiking, etc)

Since then I have picked up a 14060 two line sub, and a 66' GMT master Gilt dial small 24 hour hand. which is the only watch I think about trading for a BLNR, so I can wear it.

Back on subject, I chose the EII knowing it would not hold value the same as some of the others, but since I will never sell it, I went with the watch I wanted and glad I did.

Loving it on a bund strap - gives the watch a different character.

The Polar looks great on that strap

I live in the desert, so when I go for a mountain climb, bike ride, the drag-races, or out to a off-road event..The EXP II is the right watch for the event. It doesn't have the fragile rotating bezel to get sand and grit into, and bangin' it against the rocks and dragging through the brush has little affect.

Hey....if you spend your time clubbin' and posen', then strap on that blingy GMT or your Beach Daytona.

But if you have a serious TT event, or your climbing the dunes in your modified VW1800, or rock climbing in the Jeep....The EXP II is the ultimate workhorse:

hi , much as i respect this point of view , and egree with most of it , i dont understand why the 24 hr function is needed , there fore a simple explorer 1 would do nicely ,,, i can never quite make up my mind with the exp 2.

my 216570 polar will be arriving in a couple of weeks :). I almost got it as my first Rolex as it was the one I thought was best looking. However I was talked into the sub-C. Now some 5 years later I will get getting one. Long overdue.

You'd think, since I already have both 16570s, that the 216570s wouldn't be of interest. I've been telling myself that since they became available, and even convincing myself when I try them on that they're too big for my wrist... but slowly they're getting under my skin. They're so incredibly well made (like the 214270 I have). I think if the accents were yellow (like my incoming North Flag), I'd struggle to resist... and the fact they the Explorer IIs have never been that popular just make them even more attractive to me

My first Rolex.
It's pretty much all you want in a Rolex sport watch. It's my daily beater and it looks like one.

You know I love my Polar Explorer II with the orange hand. It's a tough, beautiful, & gorgeous watch that somehow flies under the radar. The orange hand simply makes the watch POP! Especially in the sunlight. But sometimes I wonder if I would buy it again only because I almost never actually use the orange hand & it sometimes seems to get in the way of clarity, especially at night. What I often find myself wanting is a date AND a day function.

Yeah, I know, there's the DayDate for that. But I LOVE the extreme legibility of my Explorer. An Explorer with the size, lume, & hands of the 216570 with a day & date function instead of an orange hand would be awesome.

Not planning to trade or buy again as my watch was a gift from my wife for losing 6o lbs & getting in better shape (so it's my watch for life)... just fantasizing & venting a bit.

Initially designed to use it as day/night function when you are in a cave . As it was intended for cave exploring, once under the surface you are not able to distinguish day from night.
I.e. :

Under the surface but in my case, the cave (named Eyes of God) is collapsed and light enters in it.

Polar is definitely on my short list. I am only looking at this version as I have plenty of other black dials and white dial would fit nicely into a rotation. The black dial's floating 24 hr hand is very tempting though.

The Explorer 2 reminds me of that Seinfeld where Jerry is dating the perfect girl, but nobody likes her. She does volunteer work, she's super sweet and attractive. The Explorer 2 is the modern size, has the cool 24 hour hand, date with magnifier, yet still not a lot of love relative to some others models.
