Tasty!

Salted&pickled raw herring stuffed with raw union rings, bathed in a sour mayonnaise sauce.

Combined with some rye bread

If that's mandatory I'll pass on the herring.

BTW, Searchart, I do like your snack, without mayo, though. Must get some. On fresh bread, yum....

It is definitely rich in calories, but with all the training I do I can use it

If you ate that all day long you'd get a heart attack or stroke within a week

Bas, that looks terrible.

Is it a common Dutch dish?

I agree it does not look very fancy.

We Dutch love our pickled herring, fermented herring, salty herring. As long as there is a lot of fatty acids, salt and a herring involved it is good.
Oh and unions, don't forget the unions!

I'm looking forward to the new herring from this year
which is raw, slightly salted and fermented and should be eaten like this:

The Dutch palate seems to be very interesting. I remember flying on KLM years ago and I still remember how strange the food was. There was a lot of mayonnaise. A LOT.

It's good as long as it's deep fried, mayo and unions are involved or when it's mashed.

Some examples of fine Dutch cuisine:

Frikandel speciaal a ground beef stick/sausage, deep fried until dark brown. cut open, apply a very generous amount of curry-ketchup, unions and mayo. Eaten as a sidedish next to fries.
Fries are usually the main dish here, drowned in mayo.

Oliebollen literally translates to oil balls. Deep fried batter with raisins, usually eaten on NYE, with a lot of sugar on top.

Stamppot A combination of mashed potatoes and vegetables, oftel carrot or kale. Usually eaten with a smoked sausage, actually you have to eat it with smoked sausage.
Does not go well with mayo unfortunately, you could deep fry the sausage for good measure though

More mayo might make it palatable for people who don't like fish, might also clog the arteries.

Nut sure about the pickled fish, but I would eat all of the above.
