Rap and Rolex.

Hi

Question: Had the media/stars on TV steered toward your Rolex purchases? I am not talking about Rolex ads. I am talking about the likes of 2 pac or biggie smalls for example.

Note: if you are over the age of 40 years old. You are going to say who are you talking about? So perhaps this is not the thread for you unless you like rap.

Cheers.

No they haven't and I doubt they will. I don't think Rolex is "bling" enough for the rap/hip-hop industry.

I know that Christopher Wallace (Biggie) loved Rolex with a passion. Eminem also wears a stainless Sub. These are just things I notice, it had absolutely no impact on my like for Rolex. I happen to like Biggie, although some of his lyrics are a bit violent, they are genius at the same time.

Your right about the 2000's so far. As for the mid 1990's different story. 36 mm watches was choice and Rolex was the bomb for those rappers such as Mase, Tupac and biggie. as well as many others loved the datejust and day-date.

Not at all. Drug or party money drive the rap bling mentality. My timepieces were purchased with money made from the aerospace industry.

Came in the Range
Hopped out the Lexus
Every year since
I been on that next
Traded in the gold for platinum Rolex
Now a **** wrist match the status of my records

Used to rock a throwback
Ballin on the corner
Now I rock a tailored suit
Lookin like a owner
No I'm not a Jonas
Brother, I'm a grown up
No I'm not a virgin
I use my kahonas

(Jay-Z, 'On to the next one', from his last album)

Modern rap. Now I don't feel so old anymore. My memories are from the 90's in rap culture.

Well - Jay is one of the guys I will still listen to, but I also grew up in that 90's culture. However, it is him and maybe three other acts I still accept, the rest is too silly and commercial.

Interesting. I'm not a rap aficionado by any means, but I have enjoyed some of Biggie's music and Tupac's too. As a casual fan, I had no idea they were into Rolex.

Any opinions on that movie depicting his life?

Great movies. One was about Biggie forget name was recent and the other a few years back about Tupac (tupac resurrection) both great movies life stories.

Tupac wore a day date (yellow gold) in real life

Biggie wore a custom Date just two tone with dimond bezel in real life.

With the exception of James Bond...a character...I never saw a Rolex on a celeb and said, Hey, now I want one! I just liked the watch and wanted one on ME.

I bought the Hamilton Ventura (Quartz - before I knew better) in the late 90's...before Will Smith wore one in Men in Black. Almost threw mine away after people said, Hey, you have the Men in Black watch!!!

Yeesh.

I think that's another facet (marketing) of the genius of Rolex. The watch brand stands on it own. Other brands heavily depend on celebrity endorsements to elevate the name, Rolex could do with or without them. Maybe its a good thing for us since Tiger Woods could of been heavily involved with Rolex and drag them through the mud somewhat.

To be honest they are a stain on Rolex's image. They sometimes make me consider Patek or Omega.
