Icon20 I'm paying with cash...

I've heard that if you offer an AD cash the price of a watch usually goes down. This may be a stupid question, but does "cash" mean paying with a check or do I litterally have to have my 10k in an envelope ready to go? I just don't want to look likie a complete novice when I go shopping for my TT Ceramic Sub later this month at a couple of AD's.

Thanks!

I have paid with both cash and check. It didn't seem to matter to the dealer either way.

I guess the means of cash versus a credit card. which will charge the AD about 3%, WOULD make a difference.

I have found that Cash, being paper money, might get you a break in sales tXXXXs as well.

I would think use of a check would serve the purpose of "cash". To be clear, though, perhaps asking your AD their preference (before purchase day) will make sure you get the best deal possible.

Cash is ( in the US ) the green and black / other hues paper stuff.

Verifying a check is a pain and adds to the crap you are trying to cut through by throwing down some Dead Presidents (or perhaps monarchs in other parts of the world).

Ask Justin, our tattoo artist / Rolex fiend on TRF about throwing down (literally) a stack of bills at an AD!!!

CASH means CASH, not a check. Go get your money out of the shoe box and then you go make your best CASH deal.

Wolfgang,

Looks like 10K is missing in the box?

I thought it was 200K last time and now it looks like only 190K?

I don't think that most of the chain stores care how you pay for it... In most of the cases, they're just sales staff making a sale..

I once paid with 9k in cash and they acted like it was nothing. They did take me into a back room to do the transaction.

Just make sure the ink is dry and mix a few old bills in with the new ones.

Spare a thought for the poor tossers at the AD (like me) who have to count all of those notes up!

"Cash" really means any form of payment where the AD is guaranteed all of the money up front. So if you pay in _real_ cash, then obviously it's guaranteed. If you pay with a credit card, as long as the card doesn't decline, they know they'll get the money in a couple days from the merchant account processor.

Now obviously a check is not guaranteed to clear, but most AD's use this system called "Telecheck" where the company, Telecheck, Inc., pays the AD the check value (minus Telecheck's commission for taking the risk). If the check is actually bad, then Telecheck loses the money, but they still have to pay the AD. So no matter what, the AD gets paid. This is why some AD's take a check just like cash.

exactly.. furthermore, the visa charges 2%, the amex 3% and the mastercard 1%, so what you can do is to say that you will pay with cash/check (..is the same) and maybe you will have a decrese of 2-3%..of coursr most cc now gines you back at least 1%, so am not sure if the whole procedure has any significant meaning.

of course, the managers/ nice ladies etc of an ad do not care about this/ and i also am not sure that 50 or 40 dollars less worth the task....

Thanks for the quick answers! So, if I go into an AD and ask for 20% off a new TT Ceramic Sub in addition to no sales tax, which is 9.25% in my area, and I offer to pay with cash will I get the watch? Or will I be laughed out the door?

You may be able to get 20% off for a TT watch, don't know about sales tax.

I have not bought a Rolex it quite some trime. Used to be up to 10% on SS models, 10-15% on TT, 15% up to 25% or more on all gold/platinum models depending on any stones. (or around those % discounts)

BUT, have been seeing other posts where people seem to get up to 25% on SS sports models with NO TAX. So times are changing and in your favor. Down economy if you ask me. So know that discounts are flowing freely and it is not like it used to be.

Like it was said by someone else in another post, the most they can say is "no".

Good luck.

The way it went when I bought my new Sub was, I looked at the sticker price, asked the salesman if that was their best price and he talked to the owner and came back with a price that was 20% off, tax and all. I always ask their price "out the door", meaning tax and wax. I don't remember if I paid cash or check. Later. when I got my Daytona for MSRP, I asked if they minded if I used Mastercard and they didn't have a problem. I figured I might as well get the rewards on the card since I pay it off monthly anyway.

Cash, to me, means bundles and bundles of money.

I appreciate that there is more cover with plastic but I have paid for all but one of my Rolex watches in cash.

The only draw-back in the UK now is that some banks and some shops ask all sorts of silly questions if any withdrawl / deposit / payment is over 10K (GBP) cash (bundles of money).

I prefer to use cash and do so whenever I can as it usually leads to a better deal.

There are advantages to pay by credit card. Many cards will extend a warranty. Also, if you get cash back, it's like getting 1-2% discount.

I've always paid with a credit card at an AD, but still managed a discount. I suppose my discount would have been more significant if I paid with cash !
