GMT II Weirdness this AM...
OK, so I put on the GMT II this AM. It's on my wrist for maybe15 min or so while I am at my PC. Notice the watch is stopped - while on my wrist. I reset it / give it a number of winds. Seems fine the rest of the day.
Now this afternoon ~ 15 minutes ago, I notice it has lost 20 minutes! I have reset it to 4:28 PST. What gives??? Any ideas?? |

No one can answer that by the information given. Looks like a trip to the watchmaker.

Nope. It's gonna take more than a full winding. I had the same problem with one of mine. It was a part, but I am no watchmaker and don't know which part. My guess is that it is the same part.

Bill, when you say a couple of winds, you mean 40-50 right? If you've done this and you are getting problems then it's a trip to the doctor.

I would say at least 25 - 30 this AM... I wound it again just now - 50 turns. We will see... Question. Should the watch STOP winding after 50? My mechanical Speedy Pro comes to a full stop / resistance...but I feel I could have kept winding my GMT II some more? |

Probably needs a good overhaul, amigo.
Get 'er cleaned at the AD or send her to the RSC. She'll be good then.
Good luck and cheers, mate.

The 'slipper' mainspring has been discussed on many threads and there are some pix of the way it operates. You might need to search a bit. A modern auto Rolex can't be overwound as the mainspring will slip in the housing. 50 - 60 turns should give a full wind and it should run for about 48 hrs. Your Omega Speedy (like mine) is a manual winder and the crown will stop turning once fully wound.

It stopped like this once before...but was not sure if it had been sitting a long time. This time, I think it was sitting maybe a day. I just did not think with some winding and "normal" use during the day that it would stop at 4:00 in the afternoon from the AM episode. I don't think it was worn much...and it is a D so ~ 2005. Perhaps it is time for a service...but I have heard of sport watches going much longer before needing anything. The ONLY thing I can think that I did out of the ordinary was winding it a tad backwards to get to 10 past 10 on a photo shoot the other day. That would not have done anything...would it have? |

My Sub stopped working when it was six weeks old. Turned out to be its balance wheel, the watchmaker had it up and running within 24 hours, then monitored it another 24 before returning it. I'm with the crown- send it in for a nice service (cleaning, oiling & regulation) and all will be well pronto!

Gotcha...But the watch is running. Just did not need to spend $600 right about now.

Ok
looks like the GMT was pretty magnetized. I am now demagnitized but have been advised to keep an eye on things. Not sure how it happened. Watchmaker opined that my laptop could have caused it??? We'll see... |

It happens but it's a really simple fix as you know. Hope it works out and you avoid the service. Like has been said, you can't over wind the watch. What I would do maybe is wind it and set it down. Take note of the time and see how long it takes before it stops. Should be about 40 hours.

Hopefully it's good to go now Bill.
Regarding the magnetization, would that have happened on the new GMT IIC with the Parachrom hairspring, which is supposedly completely unaffected by magnetism? Just curious if I need to be concerned about the issue.
