Fate was meant to be on my Sub Date

I followed the kind advice from our members and decied to go with an AD; since this will be my first Rolex. I have gone to several AD around the Bay Area (SF, East Bay, and South Bay) all with the same story. I would ask, "Whats the best you can do if I decided to buy one today?" Some dealers would laugh others are stern, "We cannot give discounts on Rolexes especially on the Sub Date, they are in high demand. Then they would continue on with their sales pitch blah..blah..blah. At one place in SF this dealer literally insulted me for asking this question and then grimaced at the Tag I was wearing. What a pompous ass.

Anyway, to make the long story short. On Sunday my family and I decide to go take a family portrait since my daughter just turned 3. We made an appoinment with the studio and had some time to kill, so I ask my wife if we can go to a Rolex dealer nearby. Its a small Indain jewelery store. Everyone seems friendly and curteous enough. I walk over to the Rolex section and asks the dealer if I can try on the Sub. It fitted pretty good...a bit loose. The dealer said that his father could adjust it to my liking. So, I thought I'll ask him if they give discounts. He walks in the back and a few minutes later he walks over to me and said this is the best we can do $4400. I looked to my wife a little stunned and asks the dealer if this is new. Of course, "this is our new Z series with a 2 year warrenty from Rolex." I looked to my wife again and smiled..."This was meant to be, let's get it." His father made the final adjusments and I walked out wearing my new Rolex. What a beautiful day that was.

Congratulations to your new Rolex, the submariner is a wonderful choice.

With your experience with different ADs, I totally understand it. Some can really be an ass while some are really nice. The bottom point is that you got your deal, $4400 is a good price for getting it in the United States.

It almost seems like the pompous arrogant AD's are the norm nowadays. And guess which AD you'll be going back to for your wife's Rolex...

Sounds like a real nice deal on a true icon of a timepiece. Congratulations.

IMHO, AD's are the reason the gray market dealer is thriving!! I have a story, but I will start a new thread later.Hayman4353

Congratulations! I had the same experience with my AD. New Z-series Sub/date out the door for $4419. I can't believe that many ADs still try to snow you. If, as someone on here mentioned, their markup is 40%, they can afford to cut you some slack. It's not like they have a limited supply except maybe in the case of the SS Daytona.

I'm looking into getting my wife a SS DJ for Mothers Day. My AD says the best he can do is 10% off . I'm no big spender there, but this will be my fourth Rolex from that place in just over a year. I've since flipped all but one, but WTF, they still made the money on the sales. I just hate when negotiations begin like this. My Ad BAloooooows, but they're the only game in town

congrats. and you are absolutely right. they are pricks. i had several shops in the bay area scoff and lambaste me for wanting to deal. you know what? i wouldn't give them my business. i found a shop in santa cruz that would offer me a discount. it doesn't matter if the discount was a dollar to me its the principle. im a salesman and to me, if you don't want to negotiate, it isn't called sales. just my 2 cents

that would make me feel like a chump. i would tactfully remind that clown how much money you've given him over the last year, and that you appreciate his initial offer, but if he still can't find it in himself to give a customer who has spent probably 20k in 12 months a better discount then what amounts to a spit over sales tax, you're going to have to shop at his competitor out of town.

Good lesson to learn here !!

I have said it before, here on the forum.Dont go the the large flashy store,go to the little AD with the small Rolex sign.Thats where you will find the best deal ..

If I again read about this inabillity to find discounts in the States,I am going to puke !!! The contrary has been proven over and over again

Got my Sea-Dweller for $4400,as a matter of interest

Anyone that pays list for a Rolex, should be expelled from TRF.My suggestion.

Are we talking about Red Indians or Indian Indians here, Chris?

in California we have lots of Native "red" Indians. I'm assuming Chris means east indian.
The reason i got a good deal was because i looked for a small independant jeweler in a realitively crummy area, but better than that, its an area full of hippies who scorn things like nice watches. you cant make this stuff up folks. As such, the dealer doesn't have a huge clientel and doesn't do alot of volume. That SD i picked up was new but 2 years old. once i found this out i knew i could drive a harder bargain.
