Rolex submariner genuine?
Hi all, just joined this forum as I am wanting to purchase an authentic second-hand rolex submariner and there is alot of information on the net regarding telling a genuine from a fake rolex and not sure of the best guide. It seems there are alot of high grade replicas out there with boxes and papers. I have been using http://www.bernardwatch.com/content/fakesub/ as my gide to telling apart a genuine froma fake but it seems there are no numbers on the head of the bracelet that attaches to the case of rolex submariner watches I have looked at on a few sites of jewellers here in Australia. Who to believe? This internet site or the second hand jewellers?
Some feedback would be great on this to make sure I purchase without disappointment. Cheers, Mark Last edited by mibondin; 14 July 2007 at 03:16 PM.. Reason: make description clearer |

Hi Mark, welcome to The Rolex Forum
I think that you need to do some research here and elsewhere to obtain a knowledge base to assist you in making a purchase that you will be happy. Having said that, what type of Submariner are you interested in buying? Date, no date, Green Sub, TT? If you have not purchased a Rolex over the internet before, it might be prudent to buy one over the counter. You don't necessarily have to buy a new Submariner over the counter either, there are several shops in Melbourne and in Australia that have a range of good used Rolex that include Submariners. |

Hi Mark, welcome!
As Steve said knowledge and study are key when buying pre-owned. Indeed some of the fakes are so good experts get fooled. On some the only way to be sure is to crack the watch open. An AD is the best piece of mind. Having said that the site you mention is good. Jeff is a stand up guy that stands behind his product. |

Thanks for your prompt reply guys. Had a look around Melbourne today to get an idea of pricing and models so I am more informed before my purchase. Thanks again Steve for all your helpful advice today. I realised today I should think more about the watch I would like. Saw a black dial SS GMT II which I also like the look of. The SS submariner with date is still a classic look, pref black dial. If anyone has some advice on the two models (pros, cons etc or is it just an appearance thing) I would be most grateful. I think for my first purchase it would probably be best to go through a dealer face to face here in Melbourne who gives a guarantee of the watch being 100% authentic. There are a couple in sydney however I would not get the advantage of seeing the watch first hand before I buy. If you have any private suggestions of reputable dealers around Melbourne I could get in contact with I would be most grateful.
Cheers, Mark |

Welcome Mark,
Good information is available on this Forum.. But for piece of mind, the used vs. new prices do not differ greatly, especially for a life time purchase like a Rolex. |

Welcome. The GMT II with black bezel is great for traveling in that it lets you know 2 time zones as well as looking like a sub from a short distance.

Hi Mark,
first of all a BIG welcome! I would always buy a Rolex from an AD (Authorized Dealer), since then you can be sure to get the real thing! Also, nothing beats the feeling of buying a fresh Rolex BTW: Thanks for that link you gave us! Very nice!

Hi Mark, welcome aboard!
For your first Rolex purchase you'd be further ahead to buy from a brick and mortar watch shop for a couple of reasons. First, you're not likely to end up with a counterfeit. Second, you'll have the opportunity to actually handle the watches, put them on, and decide which one sings the loudest to you.
