Looks Great In Pics..But Not in Person?

I know a lot of the time one must see a watch in person because pics can be misleading, but has anyone ever been disappointed by the watch in person after being thrilled by pics on internet?

Have to admit I was a little less thrilled with the GMTIIC LN and BLNR in person than I expected. Both are beautiful watches, I would be OK with owning either, both sang to me but just not loudly. I had the completely opposite experience, however when I first saw the EXPII 216570 in person. Once again, all a matter of personal preference and taste.

Yes, the white dial Milgauss, it looked very nice in promo pics. I considered buying one, then I saw it at the AD.
I guess different folks like different watches, which makes Rolex such an interesting brand to me.

What happened to me was I was amazed by the BLNR in many of the beautiful pics here on the forum...I went to AD and was ready to try on the BATMAN! When handed, I actually thought I was looking at the wrong watch...It was beautiful of course but it didn't have the BANG it does in close up pics..I guess that could be said for any watch really...

The opposite was true with the Sub C TT Bluesy - Pics were ok, depending on angle and sunlight etc...But then I saw it in person and I couldn't believe it...

Damn you HD pics!

I recently noticed there are different shades of blue on the BLNR bezels, some darker, some brighter blue. I must be hanging around ADs too often, under the same store lighting, 2 different shades of blue on 2 BLNRs.

The DJ2 blue dial looks amazing here but when I tried it on the blue was a bit dark and underwhelmed me a touch, altho I did try on the DD2 choco just before it so it's probably not a fair assessment. While the blue YM1 surprised me in reverse, just loved it in the ADs.

Good question/thread. Happens a lot for me. I like the BLNR but it did not sing to me (love it in pics though). I love some of the Grand Seikos but again did nothing for me when I tried it on.

Happened to me with the Omega Bumble Bee, loved the idea of the non ferrous movement and also loved the look of AT case and yellow striped second hand, but it person, not the looker I had hoped for...

I'll take flak for this...but, the Hulk looked so amazing in the prerelease photos and when I saw it, it was just OK to me.

Same here but part of the let down was that the gumby green bezel matches identically to the corporation logo I work for. Didn't want to be reminded of work everytime I wore it.

Others that left me cold were the Explorers (not the Exp42) and the black and white Milgauss.

The 40mm polar Exp II did that to me. I went in ready to buy after years for drooling and it just felt small in person. I've seen the new 42mm IRL and love it!

I LOVE it when that happens! It saves me $$ and the trouble of flipping a watch I don't really truly love in a few months. I love to read about new watches and lust after them. If it doesn't sing to me in person then I had fun thinking about it but don't look back.

That effect happened with the EXPII 216570 polar. After a few months I traded it for a BLNR, which I lusted after in pics and it was even better in person. Happily wearing BLNR mostly all the time for the past two months.

The only watch I've ever bough sight unseen in person was my BLNR and was very pleased.

For me, it's always the two tones watches. Online the pics look great and the gold has a softer color to it, almost like how alluminum looks. But in the real life the gold has a harder more shiny look to me. I've always loved the Dj II tt grey dial green makers, but in person it was no beuno for me.

Also, the lighting at the AD sometimes doesn't portray the real color of the watch. I always try on and walk to a spot in the store with a little more natural light.

Yes, so many times coming to think about it. BLNR, Milgauss GV, ExpII Polar, Omega AT are the few that come to mind now.

I found the BLNR was initially underwhelming upon my first visit to the AD to see it. Then I saw more and more real life photos on TRF especially in the sunlight which made me take a harder look at it (almost bought a 116610 instead). Now after four months with the watch it is still surprising me from different angles. Moral of the story: use all the resources available and trust your own eyes and tastes.

DateJust II TT with grey dial. Looks fantastic in pics but on my wrist it was a totally different story, too big and unbalanced.

Chocolate DaytonaC. Photographs perfectly, but dial is too dark in person.
