Help. I think USPS lost/stole my watch
Hello everyone. Hope everyone had a better weekend than me. My favorite team lost(boo-hoo) and then I discover this morning that a watch I shipped has gone missing.
I shipped a watch via registered mail insured for $8k and should've arrived last Weds. I went in today and all their tracking shows is that it was scanned in and departed their sorting facility in route to destination. Nothing else. It never arrived any where. There answer is wait a couple days more and if not file a claim "online!", really, that's it. It seems they can just steal people's stuff and then make them file claims. I feel very helpless. Any advice. Should I get a lawyer. Anyone have any experience dealing with USPS claims. Thanks for any advice. |

It's possible that your not allowing enough time and maybe jumping the gun here. Give it more time. You know shipping with any company is a risk that you have to take. Before you call out the cavalry let it play out. Everything still may be just fine.

In my past experience with USPS their insurance claim process is horrible.
Be prepared for a long wait (3 months or more). Sorry to hear it, this is why I use Fedex only these days. |

escrow is better |

If it hasn't shown that it was delivered, I think it'll turn up and you'll be fine. I have used Register mail and it's very slow but safe. Give it another week.

RM takes days and days. You're fine. Wait a few more days and it'll show up. I've had packages a week late past their "expected delivery date". Nothing out of the ordinary.

Woah....Stop the clock...
Tracking doesn't work like usual with Registered mail There will be a departure scan and an arrival scan...That's it. Coast to coast USA can take over 2weeks or more. The package is handled entirely differently than regular USPS. It is signed for everytime it changes hands and kept in locked storage at every point along the way... It is painfully slow, but extremely secure... |

Still, they should be able to track it to a specific point, slow or not. At minimum it should indicate "enroute."
Either there is a flaw in their tracking system, it was misplaced, or someone stole it (I'm guessing at least one employee knew what it was, and may have entered the item in their computer system, where it could be accessed by another employee). I hope I'm wrong. Try to track it yourself on their site using the tracking #. That is what I do. It is pretty easy to do. |

you definitely have more options with fedex or ups.
the one time i bought something meaningful with usps, was a work of art on ebay (authenticity was uncertain). for $100 i decided it was worth the risk, thankfully everything worked out (and it was only priority mail). |

With USPS registered mail insured there's no need for a lawyer. Just file the claim and you'll get you $8k back. You're basically insuring it against them stealing it, that's pretty screwed up but that's what the post office told me when I shipped my explorer to RUSA Dallas for service.

This happened to me with FedEx a few months back on a piece worth about $5000.. It was shipped overnight and after a week FedEx had no idea where it was.. The shipping details just basically showed that it was picked up and nothing after that.
After 2 weeks they finally found it in a corner somewhere in Memphis.. It was shipped insured Parcel Pro and PP does not let anything sit idle Needless to say, it finally arrived, but, I was sweating bullets.. Good thing it was insured I guess, but, don't lose hope quite yet..

I had one stolen they cut the bottom of the box and sent the box on. Insurance covered it.

USPS, as bad and antiquated and unreliable as its tracking may be, is still a secure means of sending - I would maybe give them another day ( as frustrating as it ma be ) to see if any further details surface.

USPS registered/insured is the preferred method to ship, it is also recommended by Rolex when shipping to the RSC.

I had an issue like this with USPS. The seller shipped priority express 2-day mail and ended up taking 7 days. The worst part was that there was a 5 day delay after the "Depart USPS sort facility" scan. The seller and I both called, but USPS couldn't tell us anything besides just to "wait." It did eventually show up!

Their tracking is none to swift; best you can do is...wait.

Don't panic just yet. IMO, registered mail is THE most secure way to send valuables. You can insure up to $25k and it is signed for every time it changes possession, with the accepting party verifying that the brown paper tape with unique stamps all over it is intact. Tracking is horrible compared to FedEx and UPS though.
I'm betting the package is still on its way. |

With registered mail, I don't think that's the case. It's a fascinatingly slow method. Seems to take at least a week to go from Boston to New York, and no tracking Still, it's good for the task at hand. I imagine everything's fine.

This is not my experience and I have shipped many expensive knives using Registered mail. I was always able to track. I prefer UPS because although it cost me more, tracking was better. But I could track Registered mail. YMMV.

I had a package with a 5508 bezel sent to me (east coast) from L.A. that was "misplaced" for a week. That I had to call on nearly every day to chase down before it suddenly turned up in my mailbox - reading between the lines my mail carrier wanted to not miss vacation and left package in the truck while she was gone. As soon as she was back it was delivered.
Registered is a different animal, like mentioned above it is signed for at each movement. Still, don't open a claim but start to lean on your local area PO manager to lean on the other PO area manager. Was the destination within the US or overseas?

The US Mail service seems to have slowed down since they wound up the Pony Express.

Did you ship to a Rolex RSC location? They only accept registered mail with the correct tape on the box. If this is the case, relax as it takes time. It is under lock & key the entire trip with signatures required every time it is touched.
