1680 red subs or 1655 ?

Dear all…

Would like to get your opinion, I have to choose one (sadly could not get both), which one should I get, 1655 or 1680 red subs. Both in pretty good condition.

the red 1680 is 1971, while the 1655 is 1973.

Please share your comments…

Many thanks,
west

You should get the one you like the most! If choosing one, then I prefer the 1680 as an all-rounder and iconic vintage. But it's what you prefer that matters to you. And condition is paramount. How about some photos of both?

Post some images please, I have a lovely red 1680 which I adore but have been gagging for a 1655 for years so I feel your indecision.

If you have to chose between 1680 red and 1655 expl i thing you should go for the sub. This is a more standard reference, the 1655 is a less common model and needs some adapting to....

The red on a 1680 is just the printed word "Submariner"--it may have aesthetic appeal but no real function. The color on an Explorer 2's 24 hour hand (or GMT's, for that matter) is functional--to clearly indicate the second time zone. That's tool watch thinking.

1655. More interesting and unusual-looking watch, with that funky big orange hand that screams the 1970s. Red Subs are fantastic, of course, but if you want to stand out more, the Explorer II 1655 is the way to go. Just super cool.

No wrong answer but generally speaking I would opt for the one that is fundamentally more different. There are lots of subs out there but comparatively few 1655's, the difference is mechanical and physical...not just aesthetic. Having had both I can say it's a tough call!

Well,...I agree on newer models. The 1655 has no second timezone feature. The lack of a rotating bezel along with the 15xx movement degates this.

Would need to see pics to vote. Pick which ever one is in the best condition.
Both are great references.

Buy the nicest example between the two.... Or wait for the best example of the one you want!

I would go with the 1655, as I think it's one of the very coolest watches ever made. Everything about it is awesome. However, you need at least one other awesome watch in your arsenal, as orange simply doesn't go with everything. The only thing that could sway me in the other direction is if the Red Sub had a beautiful faded ghost bezel insert (which I think looks killer against the red, in combo with the matte dial). But alas, this looks to me like a pretty standard insert--although still a beautiful watch, of course.

Thanks, Mike, my bad... of course, the 1655 24-hour hand is synced GMT Master-style so it really only shows AM/PM with the fixed bezel, not a second time zone as the later 3185 (GMT 2-style) jumping hour hand allows. If you're spelunking or living the rock and roll life indicating day or night is a useful function anyway...
