sub or gmt2?

hey guys, i'm a newbie in the forum. i currently own an explorer 2 and several other watches which i don't dare to mention in this forum.anyway, i can't decide whether to get a sub or a gmt2. I always wanted a sub but i prefer the gmt2 aesthetically (there about the same price). I don't really need a divers watch cause i already own one and don't need a travellers watch cause I have the explorer 2. I just want a new rolex and I'm sure of all people you guys would understand.
Most people i've asked (including my ad)would still prefer the sub over the gmt. The solution i thought of is to get the sub no date since it's cheaper by a couple of hundred dollars and that's that. however, my ad said that it's a waste in terms of future value and i might as well get the sub date instead but if i get the sub date i might as well get the gmt2 (but the future value isn't the same). I want to start a collection and it says in an old post that no collection could be started without a sub.
anyway, sorry for the long post but i been thinking about it already for a week and it's driving me nuts. your thoughts will greatly be appreciated.thanks

Hi and welcome to our fine forums. First off we arent like other boards, talk about all the different watches you like, dont let our name fool you.

Now as for your AD, dont listen to him/her the 14060M (Sub no-date) is the true original, it is based on the watch that started it all and just because it doesnt have all the features of some of the other models it doesnt make it any less a Rolex in my eyes. Also as a collector who cares about future value (it may not rise like some models might, key word being might) if its an investment you want, dont collect watches there are safer and more profitable ways to invest.

Now I would personally give the SD a look as I really love the weight and feel of it a lot.

finally the best way to go about this is go into the AD try on all 3 (GMT2, Sub, Sub-date) and take home the one that smiles at you most.

Hi bogey and a big TRF welcome to you.

My personal feelings would be to go with my heart. If you can go to an AD and ask to look at both in the flesh. I'm sure one will say "Take me!" If you are starting a collection and don't chose the sub, you can always add it later. No doubt what ever you choose, I don't think you will regret it.

Welcome to TRF, bogey. And Roger is right. Feel free to mention any and all watches in your collection (as long as they're not of the fake variety). Many of us collect multiple brands, as you can see if you've read any of the threads here.

As for which Rolex to get, we can all give you our opinions and favorites (most people here know mine so I won't bore you with it). The best thing to do is head for your AD or several ADs and try on as many as you can. Don't ignore the DJs or YMs (or even the Daytonas if that suits your fancy). The great thing about Rolex is that they make a wide range of sport and dress watches in several different metals and combos. One of them is going to smile at you more than the others. That's the one you should get.

Keep an open mind as you look. The one that sings to you is yours.

Good luck on the hunt. And let us know what the end result is.

Oh, and keep on posting here. We're always looking for more regulars.

thanks for the warm welcome. boy,if i could afford it i'd get them both and several other pieces as well. I'm not really discounting any other model but at this this time and this budget the sub and the gmt are my options. who does not want a ym or a daytona, they're absolutely gorgeous. The problem i have with going to the ad all the models seem to be smiling at me,lol. well, thanks for the inputs, i'm going to my ad tomorrow and see if any seems to have a bigger smile than the rest. keep the ideas coming.

btw, my collection : explorer 2, a dj i inherited from my grandfather , a seamaster, suunto, g-shock, an f1 tag heuer and a tag f1 chrono.

I hope you're joking, cuz Rolex have never made a SS sub with any dial colour other than black. BTW, it's Serti, not Certi.

I say go with the one you like. A few hundred bucks is not that much of you keep the watch for many years and enjoy it.

But I personally have a thing for the sub. Date or no date, they are both great classic watches.

Like Padi said, the Sub is the icon. No collection is complete without one (or four, or five). You already have the same features and size of a GMT-II with the Ex II, and the Sub will hold its value better. Add somethng a little different.
