Re : The Ultimate Nautilus

No, this is not an incoming thread.

Not so long ago, I tried to add a 2nd PP ( ie Nautilus ) to my collection. I have kind of decided it should be gold. Here's the thread

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=375588

I recall during the previous tryouts, I was so smitten by this, even more so then the 5980R which is too top-heavy for me. Thought it was just a temporary infatuation but it hasn't gone away. To me, this is THE Ultimate Nautilus.

( not my pic )

As usual, I did a quick analysis of plus and minus

Plus

1) It's a PP Nautilus!
2) The wrist presence is second to none. It just blows everything including other Nautilus out of the water
3) It's heavy but balance meaning it is not top-heavy as the bracelet support the weight

Minus

1) The price
2) Too shouty? Bling?
3) Scratches too easily?

So what are your thoughts on this? Any existing owners here, please weigh in and share your wrist shots!

I absolutely agree Ben, that the 5980/1R is the ultimate Nautilus in my mind as well. I love the black dial with gold accents, but it is definitely not a subtle watch, so depends on what you are looking for.

While I find 5980 a little too thick for my taste, it is undeniable that the 5980/1R is the most alluring Nautilus so far. The full RG bracelet and charcoal dial balance the watch extremely well IMO, ultra luxurious but not shouty...

I'm sure some owners here wear it rather frequently if not daily. It would be interesting to see how this beautiful timepiece holds up to frequent usage.

Ben, this would be the ultimate Nautilus for you, my good buddy!

Its a fantastic watch but I think the ultimate nautilus is the 5711P. The 5711P is a bit more expensive but they are in the same ball park

I love the 5980/1r. When I saw it on Heru's wrist the other day I knew one day I needed to own this reference. Hopefully soon :)

What is in your current lineup Ben... Top Sport Models you currently wear and Top Dress watches you currently wear? I have never tried on the RG version with bracelet and I am sure it is a beautiful piece but for the price would add more cash and go for a Grand Comp. Also, As others have mentioned would love to see a Blue Dial on the RG version. The minus points you mentioned would be major concerns for me as well. In 2016, the 40th anniversary of the nautilus I could see them making a Grand Comp of the Nautilus. That would definitely be interesting.

Well for me the 5711P is in a different league and also impossible to get so therefore this is the ultimate Nautilus as ine can actually get it. Absolutely love it and believe me it has crossed my mind before. Ben I say go for it! Hope you get one in 2015! Cheers,

If it had the 5711p's beautiful vibrant blue dial it would be the ultimate sports watch for me period. One day I just might pick up the blue AR. Pics of both below.

Amazing piece! Classy and sporty with a little touch of bling but not too much so as to look pretentious.

Sports model will be the AP ROO Diver and the Omega DSOTM. Of course in a different league compare to 5980. Top dress watches will be my 5205R or arguably, the AP RG Skeleton. It's not enough to just add a bit more money to get the Grand complication as my ideal PP Grand Complication would be the Perpetual chronos and that cost substantially more. Very excited to see what's coming up for Nautilus in 2016 But that will be too long to wait given my impatient nature.

PS. For me RG watch always perfect with brown dial and wish they went with brown not black.
You have a point Ken about the 5711P. But I have yet to see a 5711P in real life. It's so rare and exclusive I will probably never gets to see one, much less hope to own one. Besides, 5711 is actually my least favorite Nautilus. For slim Nautilus, I actually prefer 5712 over it.

The 5980R is just as amazing but it's really too top heavy for me. Unfortunately... However, who knows? It depends how things works on in the end.

Seeing that your AP Diver and DSOTM are very sporty and on rubber and nylon bands and your dress watches are on leather there is definitely room for an all rose gold shiny piece. This piece can be worn with a t-shirt and jeans or a suit making it very versatile and different from your current collection. Long Story Short... DO IT!!!!

I've worn one for a short period of time, and it's an absolutely GORGEOUS watch. The dial is mesmerizing as it changes hues in different lighting. Only thing I can't get over with it is the price! lol

Hope to see some wrist shots very soon!

It's incredible but not for me, not just for the price, wouldn't feel comfortable with an all gold watch, even if I do find it very beautiful...

I disagree. The Nautilus is a watch with a symmetrical case and the chrono pushers kill that symmetry.
