Questions for the forum from a first time buyer
Hi all, I’m looking for some help and advice.
I am looking to buy a 5167a (I know, I know...) in the best, safest way possible. I’m willing to pay the (inflated) aftermarket prices, but a) obviously don’t want to buy a fake and b) don’t want to get gouged beyond the normal secondary market prices. With that in mind, I had three question for you pros: 1) what is a reasonable price for a 5167a? 2) what sellers should I start with? Are popular sites like chrono24 overpriced? 3) should I care about box and papers? If not, what kind of discount should I get as compared to a 5167a with box and papers? Really appreciate any help. |

1. “Reasonable” is subjective I suppose. For many , reasonable is msrp
2. Always buy the seller first- several trusted sellers on TRF- DavidSW, takayu, justrolexes, Govberg/watchbox etc 3. For a current production PP I would def want b&p Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

This sums it up. Get the box, papers, tags if you can.

DavidSW has been sitting on two of them for a bit now. Things could be negotiable. |

European Watch also has four from different years on offer and, while I didn't follow closely, they seem to have been pricing them down lately...

patek market is slowing down off late, just a bit. Maybe wait a few months to see where things go? They certainly aren't going further up.

Steer clear if there's no Box and papers and everything that comes with it.
Im only buying face to face for that kind of money or not at all. I'll even fly if it need be. I agree not to rush things because prices are going south. Sent from my SM-N970F using Tapatalk |

I only buy with box and papers. First, it provide some help with authenticity. Second, higher end watches are considerably less liquid without them.

I would have no concern not buying face to face if its from a reputable seller. I've bought or traded for many higher end watches from many sellers, most of which weren't face to face (including a 5167a)
I would certainly want the B&P for a watch up in this value range. New or slightly used? Does age matter? Do you want Bracelet or Rubber? or both? Slightly used on rubber you're probably looking in the $35-$40k range. Maybe a touch less if its w/out B&P, in rough shape, or old enough to need service. (Probably a touch more if you want new and with both rubber and bracelet)

I will just get that 5396 from his same listing. It is 10k cheaper than those aquanauts and it is an AC.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.
One additional question: seems pretty clear I should buy with B&P from one of the dealers mentioned in the thread and a slightly used 5167a with the rubber strap should run $35-$40k. But, if I do that, should I do anything else to authenticate the watch (ask an AD to look at it, find an appraiser, etc??) or is that unnecessary. |

Unless you are very familiar with Pateks, and watches in general, do yourself a favor and buy an unworn 5167 with the full set, i.e. box and Certificate of Origin, of recent date. Spend the extra bucks.
