Explorer 14270 vs Vintage Datejust 36

Hello TRF. I'm really splitting hairs here on my next purchase.
I'm looking to add a Rolex back into the collection and cannot choose between the two.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I am considering a:

1. Rolex Explorer 14270 (holes case with tritium)

2. Rolex vintage datejust e.g. 16220 (unsure of what to get specifically as I have only previously owned relatively modern)

My question to you is, shall I go the explorer or datejust for the only Rolex in the collection.

If datejust, please recommend which reference you would go for.

Much appreciated in advance

Cloitus.

I have the 114270, F serial. I recommend the Expy...love the dial and you get the oyster bracelet. Could be an only watch.

I’d say it depends on what the other pieces are in your collection, and what role this sole Rolex will play.

If you want an iconic watch that would “represent” the brand in your collection, then the DJ has the slight edge. Depending on your dress style and watch wearing preferences, it may/may not get much wrist time.

If you are looking for something that could be worn at almost all times and fly “under the radar” (ie not scream Rolex to the general public) then the Explorer has the edge.

agreed, and for some an explorer 1 is an exit watch

As someone who has a 14270 on an Oyster bracelet, I totally agree with the assessment of the Explorer. I wear it to work (general counsel of real estate investment company) and to the beach on weekends.
